I love riding cable cars and this is one of them. The ride alone gives me the thrill. We were staying in Bellagio and therefore we had to buy the day ticket for the ferry up to zone 4 to cover our trip to Argegno. In August 2014, the cost per head was €16.30 per person for a day. It was worth it as we could take the ferry as often as we could during the day. It is very important to check the timetable of the ferries before you walk the trek going to the cable car station. Took about 15 min to walk from the Argegno ferry station up to the cable car station called Pigra. At the top, the view was very breathtaking. Just a word of caution, be careful while walking along the road towards the cable car station as the drivers here in Italy drive wild inspite of the narrow roads. On this day, we were able to go to Lenno and Varenna before going back home to our hotel in Bellagio.
A memorable cable car ride which slowly but surely provide the best view of Lake Como both on the way up or ride down. One can take an exercise to walk instead.
This was being fixed when we first arrived in Argegno. But it was working by end of our second week. Near beginning of our trip we drove up to Pigra (which was an adventure in itself) but when this was working had to go on it.The times can limited during the day, unless it's seasonal, so only had limited time in Pigra the second time. Enough to get some more photos and an ice cream. Ride up didn't take too long and was alittle scary but only when it passed the pylons and the cab shook alittle.
One of europe's steepest, offering fab views on a clear day.Worth a trip. Once up you can have a walk about a very quiet village and then come back down, unless you want to walk, which can be done in an hour.
We love this cable car ride as one can view como lake completely. A great scenric view from the top. My son loved it.
All the tripadvisor reviews were very helpful regarding Pigra cable car but the one important fact that i did not see mentioned is that it is closed between 11.30 and 14.00 so plan accordingly.
I used my trip up to Pigra as an exercise plan but.... it lead to a two hour plus walk back down the mountain. I missed the signs as there is a path down that should be much, much faster. Please get directions in English before you try this stunt...The Cable Car up and down is fun as the view is stunning.
Park by the harbour and walk over the bridge past the church. Short walk along the road to the bottom of the cable car. Great views at the top for only €4 return but there is not much at the top. Bit of a tacky bar there but at least somewhere to get a drink while waiting the 30mins until the return journey. If you do fancy a walk into the village there is a nice old drinking well to get fresh water.
We just went for a quick look up and did not venture into the Pigra hamlet itself as we were afraid to miss the last cable car down but it was worth it all the same.Fantastic view on the lake!
Actually if I had to rate the cable car it would be next to zero...very dirty and run down and stopped working (which according to the bar man in Pigra this seems to be a frequent occurence) This left us stranded in the small village in the rain and took us over 1 1/2hours to get back to our car by bus. Yet, on the plus side Pigra is a wonderful little hamlet with scenic walks in its woods leading to breathtaking views of lake Como...the locals are also very nice and helpful...despite the mishap with the funivia I would definitely go back (perhaps by car this time:)
The cable car is great way to get amazing views. A bit scary if you are afraid of heights but worth it to get to the top. Pigra is a lovely town. Very peaceful and there's a little walk you can take to get once at the top to take you to a view point. Would be beautiful view but the pylons get in the way. When we went up it was still cloudy however, we waited a while and the clouds lifted leaving a stunning view all around.
The 8 mile walk back down to Colonno is well worth it. It took us 2.5hrs and we passed through some beautiful hamlets (Corniga) and countryside. There are clear signs to Corniga and then the trail has blue & orange painted marks to follow. Not to be done if you have weak knees as its steep in places. Great views of the lake toward the end of the walk. From Colonno you can walk the Greenway path, catch the bus or stop at Sala Comicina for a swim and coffee. Bliss!
The cable car ride is excellent and the views from the top are terrific. Pigra is a beautiful quiet town and i highly recommend the trip. The staff in the cable car stations were polite. But there is one thing all travellers should be warned about and should definitely avoid. This is the cafe at the top just as you get off the car - and particularly the tall psychopathic man who works behind the bar. There is a sign outside saying 'Tourist Info' and 'English Spoken' suggesting a warm friendly welcome. On entering you are met with a sarcastic, aggressive, tall, abusive and seemingly unhinged Italian 'man' with a hideous attitude. He chased me down the street screaming at me as I dared to walk out after he was utterly rude to both my children and myself for NO REASON. He had both my children in tears and both were genuinely terrified, it seemed that he was prepared to attack us. So do beware and please do avoid this awful man, his awful cafe and his frustrated and misguided sense of machismo. Making children cry and run away in fear and terror is not really a nice way to make tourists feel welcome.
Views of the lake and quaint village. It's a bit steep but there is a viewpoint through the forest which is well worth a visit.
Well it's scary if you are a complete cable car novice like me! But it only takes about 4 minutes to reach the top ( or bottom) so it's a very short time to be scared/ thrilled. The view from the top is quite incredible, almost 360 degrees around the lake and mountains. Beautiful and awe inspiring. I would suggest you arrive early in the day, find a parking space in Argegno, and then walk back along the main road (Menaggio direction) until you find the cable car station. It's not that well sign posted or easy to spot in amongst the houses. At the top there's not much to do other than have a coffee and admire the view so unless you want to take a picnic or hike I would time it carefully and not get stranded at the top over lunchtime. It's well worth it so be brave and do it!
