Use this to gain views of the Upper Town from an...upper village. Views at sunset are best. Cheap to use / takes Bergamo card.

A bonus is that it arrives at the top right beside a wonderful al fresco restaurant, so chose a lunchtime trip and kill two birds with one stone!

BergamoWe found this gem at the end of a long and meandering aimless drive on the roads that criss-cross the area to the north and uphill of the old town of Bergamo. The drive is very scenic, but it is better enjoyed on a scooter/motorcycle or a SMALL car, as in many places the roadway is so narrow that it should really be a one-way street. Except that it is not, so be ready to back up (uphill, as the right-of-way goes to the car going up the slope) to the nearest widening when someone is coming the opposite direction. Even when there is no traffic, the road is so narrow and twisty that posted speed limits are meaningful only for would-like-to-die-now drivers. The entire area is well worth spending an afternoon. The villas speak of money, both old and recent, and privilege. The castle is the main attraction, and it is good state of repair and safe to explore. If you drive (instead of taking the funicular) park near the top and wonder around on foot; the hilltop is great for a late afternoon stroll leading to a romantic dinner.I would easily recommend this attraction to anyone.

Lovely way to visit the beautiful old town of Bergamo and to enjoy the beautiful scenery and to take some photos. The old town is worth a visit, must not be missed.

ST Vigilio above Bergamo Alto, sits at the foot of the Alps. Bergamo itself is a wonderful place with narrow roads and full of history. But the funicular up to ST Vigilio is a must. Going up to the Castle in ST Vigilio you find yourself with a wonderful panorama in the stillness of the area. you could spend hours here sitting down and noting the Alps some covered with clouds as if smoking, others dotted with terracotta roofs amidst different shades of green. if you find walking difficult do not go up through the castle itself but take the wide steps next to the villas before taking the path to the castle. This route is much easier on the knees and gets you to the top of the castle.

Exploring the "neighborhood" of San Vigilio is well worth your time and taking the funicular up there is a nice little diversion. Unlike, the Funicolare Di Citta Alta, this funicolare is a bit longer in length so there's more time to savor some views as the train car ascends. The San Vigilio village is a lovely place to explore and perhaps grab a drink at sunset. From cafes, to vistas of the surrounding lowlands and hills, to castle grounds; you'll be glad to have elevated yourself from the di Citta Alta for the quieter environs of San Vigilio.

Old, restored funicular goes up to San Vigilio hill for a view of Citta Alta. For good views it's better to go in the evening, but I assume it can get crowded in high season. Mainly a tourist attraction but I'm glad it was restored and put into operation. You can take a walk to the castle on the hill for a view to the countryside. Overall a very nice experience. No additional charge with Bergamo Card.

I seldom experienced such an inflexible operation which is geared towards tourists but accepts only coins. Wake up to the age of NFC payments, credit cards ...

Hot and stifling for the one minute trip if the car is full of people. But for many it's preferable to the big walk up the hill!

Easy way to get to the top of old city take many photos and enjoy in the restaurant and cafe on top a glass of wine and pasta and look over the city of bergamo in a scenery of tranquility

The tickets cost 1.5eur and unless you can buy in one of the nearby reastaurants, you will need coins to buy tickets from the vending machines. The ride is very nice with great view and saves you from a steep hike to high Bergamo.

Is very classy but little, if you are more than 20 people you have to wait 15 min for the next. In only 1 minute you are in San Vigilio, where you can admire the beautifull view of the city.

You can walk up to Citte' Alta but why not take the easy route, it's a tourist attraction in itself! It takes about 5 mins, costs very little and a lovely memory of our visit, great views but difficult to photograph due to windows and people - it holds 50 people in 2 carriages so pretty busy.

The funicolare is part of the public transportation in Bergamo, so one way cost 1,25 euros and it makes much easier and faster to go to Citta Alta. Besides the commodity it is also very interesting to go up by the funicolare.

This is the higher of the two funiculars in Citta Alta. It is a single car, and takes you to the top where there are some nice restaurants, a castle and museum, and great views. It does stop over lunchtime so check the timetable. Saying that, if you able to take on the steep walk up the hill do so, as it is really rather pleasant, and the views en route are amazing.
