This Castle is just amazing. It has been refurbished in the last few years but its condition is still the same of the past. It belongs to Federico II. The guide of the Castle is very friendly. Another great thing about this place is the atmosphere: quite and fascinating. You could have an amazing view on the sea as well, if there is a sunny weather. I highly recommend it!

First things first. This is the dead heart of Calabria and as much abounds with myths, legends and superstitions. It is alleged that Alaric, the Visigoth king was buried here with his treasure. The river was diverted, according to legend, he was buried and the river was returned to its natural course. 'Show me', is my response..... and where is my metal detector when i really need it? Philosophical pursuit is the hallmark of every advanced region, and this place, was and is, fervently dedicated to learning. To acquire the moniker of "The Athens of Calabria" is not an idle boast. Not even the Spanish, who left an indelible mark on the city were able to infuse a taste for the sensual curvature of shapes, rather than the plain and austere facades, minimally decorated so as not to overpower the sacred and dignified characters residing within these churches and palazzos. Over the next centuries, austerity was restored getting an injection in its creative juices from Casanova who declared that "the town had enough of the superfluous to render life tolerable. Craftsmanship in the form of tailors' guild and fine leather work brought praise from Prague, in fact, the entire cycle of silk production was formed here. The old city now became the periphery with the living city now beyond the river. We tested this theory by hopping over to the Swabian Castle for a looksie at the best preserved castle in Calabria. Other monuments worth visiting are the 12th century Romanesque duomo, the 13th century church of San Fransesco d'Assisi and the town's beautiful palazzos. Nature lovers will gravitate to the Sila Mountains for their lakes and enchanted, centuries-old forests. This is the largest park in Europe and should not be missed.

The castle at the very top of the hill on which sits the small town of Rocca Imperiale is one of the most well preserved and beautiful medieval castles I have ever seen. We had no expectations, and visited the town just because we were staying nearby, so the castle was a surprising treat. There is very little information available to support your tour if you go around under your own steam, as we did, but this is potentially a blessing in disguise as it gets your nose out of a guidebook and makes you experience the atmosphere and architecture of the place. It was easy to imagine the courtiers and knights of old in this substantial building, now beautifully weathered and crumbling, though with some rooms still intact and restored. The views over the peaceful agricultural country of Calabria are wonderful. Thoroughly recommended. And the walk through the maze-y town is a treat too...

This castle is open for unguided tours and you can also reserve to have a guided tour (not known if in English). We did the unguided tour. There isn't anything in the castle to explain what you are seeing but most of it is obvious. They have done an interesting restoration with glass walkways where some of the floors would have been. Not all of the areas are accessible. The castle have been modified greatly over the past 800 years.There are great views of towards the sea and the surrounding hills from the castle. There is a small entry fee but we felt it was worthwhile.Be aware that the castle is on top of the town and you will have to walk up to it. There is a marked walk from the parking but it is a steep town with few steps. You will be rewarded when you get to the castle.

Il castello è stato da poco restaurato, almeno in parte ed è visitabile con accompagnamento su prenotazione. Entri nella storia di Federico II e ne rimani affascinato. Poi puoi visitare il resto del paese, compreso il Monastero ed i musei al suo interno. In estate si possono godere spettacoli teatrali sia all'interno del castello che al Monastero. Andateci.

Dopo una bella passeggiata a piedi nell'incantevole Rocca Imperiale siamo arrivati in cima per visitare il castello,ma purtroppo ci sono degli orari ben precisi per entrare in più una parte è chiusa per restauro.Pazienza anche visto da fuori ti riporta alla storia e il paesaggio che si ammira è notevole.

Il castello è posto alla sommità del paese, da dove si ammira un paesaggio incantevole verso il golfo di Taranto.La sera il paese sottostate è simile ad un presepe con le luci che a cascata scendono dalla rocca federiciana. L'imponente castello opera di Federico II è stato più volte rimaneggiato nel corso dei secoli e soprattutto depredato degli arredamenti. Vi è una antica leggenda che narra anche di un tunnel sotterraneo che dal castello porta al mare.....

Il paese, al visitatore, appare arroccato intorno al castello di Federico. La struttura domina il paesaggio circostante sino al mare con, nelle giornate di sole, una vista mozzafiato. Imponente è il maniero con saloni, arcate, terrazze ma desta più meraviglia come già nei tempi lontani si usava la previdenza e gli accorgimenti per rendere il castello inespugnabile. E' consigliabile servirsi della guida che illustrerà i minimi particolari. Parte dell'edificio non è restaurato e non si può visitare. Dopo la visita del castello si può fare la passeggiata nel paese nel cosiddetto viale dei limoni qui si possono leggere poesie scritte su lapidi ed affisse sui muri delle abitazioni. Vale la pena andarci

Che dire! semplicemente un'affascinante e suggestivo viaggio nell'imponente glorioso passato di questo gioiello di edilizia storico militare da cui si può godere una vista mozzafiato! Una struttura che necessita ancora di ulteriori massivi interventi per renderlo completamente fruibile, ma già la parziale agibilità fornisce al visitatore l'idea di ciò che ha rappresentato per la storia del luogo. Costi accettabili e "ciceroni" preparatissimi...alcuni di loro, addirittura danno l'impressione di aver vissuto tutte le epoche che la struttura ha attraversato con importate e maestoso protagonismo! VISITATELO! L'estate diventa un coinvolgente contenitore artistico/culturale a cui è davvero difficile resistere! Un suggerimento all'amministrazione: appare spoglio, con poco si potrebbe ricreare qualche ambiente della vita di corte che magari coinvolga anche il centro storico. E' davvero una ghiotta opportunità per la valorizzazione dell' affascinante borgo medioevale che fa da cornice a questa ineguagliabile maestosa struttura!

Il castello è visitabile solo in alcune parti, poiché il restauro non è ancora completato. All'ingresso una guida di da un sunto di quella che la storia del castello dopodiché segui il percorso più o meno obbligato. Tutte i locali sono spogli ma dalle terrazze si gode un bellissimo panorama!

Das Castello war sehr schön anzuschauen, seine Geschichte sehr interessant, die Aussicht wunderschön. Die Restaurierungsbemühungen laufen, sind aber noch nicht beendet. Wenn die Arbeiten beendet sind, ist ein tolles Ausflugsziel entstanden.

Posizione spettacolare, il restauro non è completo e quindi il castello non è completamente aperto al pubblico. Merita comunque la visita.

Consigliatissimo per un viaggio nel tempo saltando in tre epoche diverse. Percorrere gli stessi gradini, stesso selciato, le stesse mura, trovarsi sella stesso piazza d'armi dove uomini hanno combattuto aspre battaglie mette una grande emozione.

bellissima location con un panorama mozzafiato solo non adatto per i portatori di handicap ha un'atmosfera da favola

Sarebbe un bel castello imponente, ma le incurie del penultimo proprietario che nel 1835 ne ha persino venduto le coperture dei tetti e gli infissi e l'abbandono degli anni successivi lo hanno reso uno scheletro di se stesso. Ora l'amministrazione comunale avrà un bel lavoro di restauro da fare per renderlo accettabile.
