A wondrous and beautiful example of the real Italy. Food is stellar and the best Pizza at 'Calipso!' Swordfish rules in Chianalea! Walk to your hearts content. Love Scilla
amazing small alleys, with a lot of foreshot in the sea. very old typical house and typical church. a must see place. free walk zone!
Back to Scilla after many years , it changed a lot ... Really crowded beaches ... Chianalea has been renovated , one of the most remarkable marine neighbourhood in Italy
Very relaxing. Friendly people. Good food. Nice place. We as a family enjoyed 9 days very much. Absolutely a place I would like to visit again.
Beautiful village, just next to the water. Plenty of lidos nearby. We had some ice cream from Zanzibar which was delicious. Lovely beach surrounded by mountains with a picturesque view of the Ruffo castle. The water was simply beautiful!! Highly recommended visit!
Chianalea is a very old charming neighborhood on the waters edge. The houses are built right up to the water. You can feel and see the history walking through the narrow streets.
It was very interesting to see the swordfish fleet circling the bay during the swordfish hunt each day. There are fantastic views from the castle over Scilla and Chianalea. We were rather upset by the number of plastic bottles lying around on the beach, however.
A 30min train ride takes you to this piece of geographical beauty. The Straits of Messina's pristine water encased by mountains is before you.A windy walk down to the beach takes you numerous back gardens.Lovely beach with a few local sun worshippers and just beautiful to look out.Ate on the beach…good salads and a beer. There are some THINGS to see but I was having a day 'off' from a map and entry fees.It provided a lovely day at the beach.
Breathtaking view of the strait of Messina and the impressive castle of Scilla (Castello Ruffo). Very romantic at night. A true pearl of the Mediterranean.
Gorgeous beach town 30 minutes from Reggio. Great Gelatorias and pizzerias. Yu can also see the castello ruffo, an ancient castle at the top of this seaside village
Picturesque and charming! A great way to spend a sunny afternoon if you're staying in Reggio. The seafood is wonderful and it's the perfect place for some fantastic photos!
Chianalea is on the other side of Scilla from the beach, with the imposing Ruffo Castle overlooking the fisherman's village. It is very quaint, houses built right up to the sea. Boats and dinghies are pulled up between the houses and the narrow street barely fits an "Ape", the quintessential italian three wheeled tiny ute that buzzes around like a bee. Worth a wander and plenty of good photo opps!
We enjoyed the beautiful and romantic walk through the town, along the water.
Clear beautiful sea a lovely beach and the town well worth exploring
Scilla is a slice of heaven, it is charming, the food and gelato is delicious and the beach and its boardwalk are memorable. There are three boroughs in Scilla:San Giorgio, with beautiful views, San Rocco Church and the piazza. It is a great spot for a coffee, gelato or pastry in one of the outside cafes. As you proceed down the steps you will encounter the Main Church of Scilla and the famous Castello Ruffo. You can take a right and head down to Chianalea or left to the Marina Grande,Neither is a bad choice.Chianalea is a historic district and can only be accessed on foot.It is very charming fishing village with cobblestone streets and brings you back in history as it enchants you. There is a restaurant that you shouldn't pass up, it is called "Il Pirata"and serves fantastic regional fare and is a very romantic setting as is as waterfront as you could get. There is also a lovely hotel,"Il Principe di Scilla" in Chianalea. Now you could take a memorable walk from Chianalea, walking toward the port and around the castle toward the Marina Grande. You will be appraoching the boardwalk of on the loveliest beaches, simply enchanting. There are plenty of restaurants to dine or get a spuntino. You can rent an umbrella with chairs and kayaks or boats to enjoy the beautiful Strait of Messina. The boardwalk is busy all day and evening and is an ideal setting for a romantic cena. There are good restaurants, I recommend Grotta Azzurra and there is great gelato, pizza and pannini if you are looking for a spuntino.Below is a website of Scilla Attractions:http://www.hotelubais.it/ubais/eng/index.htmlhttp://www.italymag.co.uk/italy-featured/calabria/scilla-calabriaHere's another review of Scilla:South of Tropea, the coastline is stunning, in particular Costa Viola, the "violet coast" and Costa degli Dei, the "coast of the gods." The most worthwhile little dot on the Costa Viola is Scilla, a picturesque fishing village named after the fabled sea monster. According to legend, Scilla was a beautiful young girl who sat at the legendary rock jutting out high above the ocean. She drew the ire of a witch upon her, who turned Scilla into a violent sea creature. That rock is now occupied by the Castello dei Ruffo, which used to serve as a defense structure towards attacks from the sea. Farther south, visit the quiet fishing area of Chianalea. Stroll around, refresh yourself with a clear, bitter soda and lunch on sea snails at Alla Pescatora or swordfish at Grotta Azzurra. The Costa degli Dei is famous in the south for its turquoise waters and the gorgeous bays of the Capo Vaticano. The most popular beaches here are Santa Maria, Baia di Riace, Grotticelle and Torre Ruffa.
