An out-of-the-way Basilica that was worth the trip for us, because it was right where my uncle almost died during a battle in WW II. We had a car, and I'm not sure you could get there without one. Beautiful views once you get there.

A truly beautiful church with frescoes painted over a thousand years ago by the byzantine monks who built and worshipped at the church. A must see place if you love art or churches.

this old tiny church is simply amazing. if you consider that it has been built 1000 years ago you can't believe it. there are many important frescos and the air you breathe when you are in is fantastic. definitely have to visit it if you are around here.. it should only be valorize more.

Perhaps only in Campania you can find monuments with so many historical layers as the Basilica of Sant'Angelo in Formis, which is above all the ancient temple of Diana Tifatina, important shrine for the Italic peoples (the Romans before they conquered all the known world at the time, subjugated the peoples living in the peninsula). It is not possible to list the important things to see in this monument, from the floors of different types that preserve those of the temple together with the early Christians, the original columns of the temple, the frescoes that alone, as they are beautiful and ancient, are worth the visit. I suggest you seek guidance before you get here. The site is accessible for people with reduced mobility. In front of the basilica there is a breathtaking view (and can also be seen far away the island of Ischia), and around many rustic eateries. Do not make the mistake not going to this place if you come around here (if you are in Santa Maria Capua Vetere a passage here is a must).Forse solo in Campania è possibile trovare monumenti con tante stratificazioni storiche come la basilica di Sant'Angelo in Formis, che è innanzitutto l'antico tempio di Diana Tifatina, luogo di culto dei popoli italici (i romani prima di conquistare tutto il mondo conosciuto all'epoca, soggiogarono i popoli presenti nella penisola). Non è possibile elencare le cose importanti da vedere in questo monumento, dai pavimenti di diverso tipo che preservano quelli del tempio con i paleocristiani, alle colonne originali del tempio, agli affreschi che da soli, per quanto sono belli ed antichi, valgono la visita. Suggerisco di cercare una guida prima di arrivare qui. Il sito è accessibile da persone con mobilità ridotta. Di fronte alla basilica c'è un panorama mozzafiato (si vede anche lontano, l'isola di Ischia), ed attorno tanti ristoranti rustici. Non fate l’errore di non passare per questo posto se capitate da queste parti (se siete a Santa Maria Capua Vetere un passaggio di qui è d’obbligo).

Suffice to say, this church is an example of the rewards to be had for venturing off the beaten path in Italy. The church is famous for the frescoes that cover its interior. As I understand it, they were painted nearly 1,000 years ago by the monks from nearby Monte Cassino. The style is Byzantine, with beautiful striations of color and a geometric feel to the figures. The church is held in high regard by art historians for both its frescoes and its Romanesque architecture.Interestingly, the church sits on top of the ruins of a Roman temple dedicated to the goddess Diana. A section of glass flooring installed during a renovation allows you to see into the early foundation. The view from the church is also pretty, as it sits atop of the village. From there you can see the domes of Capua in the distance and the vast fields stretching out below. If you are staying in Naples and want a manageable taste of “real” Italy, I would recommend setting out for a trip to the northern part of Campania. It has a lot to offer in the way of Italian country charm. GETTING THERE: An easy way to visit this area is with the little train that goes up to Piedimonte Matese. It starts in Naples and slowly makes its way up to Caserta, Capua, Sant Angelo and ultimately Piedimonte Matese. You can find the schedule on the trenitalia website: trenitalia.it.You could start with the palace at Caserta, but that will eat your day if you do not start very early. IF YOU DRIVE: After Sant Angelo’s church, drive back into the countryside behind Sant Angelo, crossing over the Volturno River. The landscape of mountains and villages perched high is quintessentially Italian. You can also stop at one of the local cheese producers tucked into the landscape and pick up delicious local products. PIZZA ALONG THE RIVER:If you’re there during a warm season, visit Triflisco, a little town just across the Volturno from Sant Angelo. There you can stop and enjoy a pizza at one of the many restaurants perched along the river. It’s VERY Italian and you will not see another tourist (most likely). At night, it’s popular with locals.This is a quiet place and one that will please if you’re stuck in Naples and hankering for a piece of small town, slow Italy. WARNING FOR DRIVERS: The traffic from Caserta back into this area can be insane. It’s close but it can take a half hour or more. Also they have their own way of driving on the main roads that will thoroughly shock most American drivers – mayhem. Get a GPS and take the superstrada that avoids the local shopping roads and you can get off in Capua and spare yourself the nightmare. POSSIBLE ITINERARY: If you’re driving…the amphitheater at Capua, the Mithraic temple at Capua, the church at Sant Angelo, a relaxing drive along the country roads stopping at local cheese makers, pizza in the evening at Triflisco and return.CHEAP SLEEPS: Next to the church is a kind of rectory with super cheap rooms for rent. I want to say like 25 euros. It is basic, bunk-beds etc, but it’s clean and safe. If you’re broke – not a bad option. It will be an experience. But people are friendly enough once get past their shocked, “why on earth are they staying here?” type stares.NICER SLEEPS: You can also try the Tenuta San Domenico, which is a beautiful little hotel with amazing grounds. It’s popular for weddings, but it’s located in countryside just on the edge of town. You’ll see the sign. You get there by driving down a narrow road that cuts through a field. A nice little place and I heard the food was quite good. Around 160 euros a night if I recall. Rooms comfortable but pretty simple.

Not very well known, but phenomenal historical, artistic and religious site. If you'll have a chance, you can do it as a detour on the way from Rome to Naples (or vice versa), or as a side trip from Naples. Historical basilica was affiliated with St. Benedict's foundation at Monte Cassino. Built on the remains of much earlier pagan sanctuary of Diana, structure is the only surviving monument with a complete set of intrecate cycle of frescoes (a clear mix of Romanesque and Byzantine styles). In some sources it is called Cassino style, as guess is made that Cassino Monastery was decorated with the same frescoes during the Medieval era. I'm sure that your detour will be greatly rewarding. Do not miss a restaurant that is located in a small house by the entry way to Basilica. Food and hospitaly are just as phenomenal as near by historical monument

Costruita sul declivio del Monte Tifata, sui resti di un tempio romano (s'intravedono le fondamenta), la prima costruzione avvenne nel sec.VI° e completata nel sec. XII°.Vi sono affreschi di epoca bizantina-campana, i meglio conservati dell'Italia Meridionale, che illustrano scene dell'antico testamento ed infine le colonne con capitelli, sia interne che esterne, non sono altro che il riciclaggio dei templi pagani, come si soleva fare all'epoca.Attualmente una parte della navata è schermata, perchè la Basilica è soggetta ad un interminabile e statico restauro di consolidamento e non si vede il termine dello stesso, per i soliti sistemi di "campa cavallo che l'erba cresce" a cui sembra sempre essere destinato questo martoriato sud. Andateci lo stesso, ne vale la pena, perchè dopo aver visto la Basilica, con il tempo ci vorrete di nuovo ritornare, per rivederla sgombera dai tubi e coperture varie, sperando che qualcuno si dia una mossa per sveltire questo coma che va avanti da anni.

Un posto dove ritrovare la pace con se stessi e con Dio.Sono di Caserta e non la conoscevo ci sono andato per curiosità è davvero bella , peccato che parte della basilica e' in restauro.Peccato che quello che ho visto nei dintorni e' il degrado più assoluto giardini non curati una piccola piazzetta senza una panchina e molte case anche antiche in degrado dispiace perché Caserta e provincia e piena di queste piccole perle da vedere per immergersi in un passato che ci faceva onore.

In questo momento e giá da un bel pó, lavori di restauro non ne permettono l'ammirazione completa. Si consiglia di attendere la comunicazione di fine lavori e completa disponibilitá dell'Opera.

... praticamente sconosciuta a tutti. E' un luogo di grande interesse oltretutto con un panorama bellissimo dalla terrazza.

Nella basilica di sant'Angelo in Formis è presente l'unico esempio di pittura romanica in Italia. NE CONSIGLIO ASSOLUTAMENTE LA VISITA!!

Da due millenni centro di spiritualità umana. Perfettamente conservata la Basilica frutto di secoli di aggiustamenti e rivisitazioni architettoniche è un gioiello d'arte. Dall'alto del monte Tifata gode di un panorama fantastico sul golfo di Napoli. Si raggiunge attraversando il borgo antico che meriterebbe di uscire dal degrado in cui versa. Lontano dai flussi turistici di massa è amata ed ammirata dai tanti fedeli e dai moltissimi appassionati d'arte. Da visitare assolutamente, avendo acquisito in proprio le notizie storiche, sul posto non vi sono guide né opuscoli informativi.

Fantastica, meravigliosa. Peccato che l'abbiamo trovata in restauro e non abbiamo potuto vedere tutti gli affreschi.

Indescrivibile! Meravigliosa! Un tripudio di affreschi paleocristiani e una vista da mozzare il fiato.

è l'unico esempio di romanico puro ben conservato in italia. il piazzale offre un panorama bellissimo. nelle giornate terse si può intravedere l'isola di capi. da non perdere. è facilissimo da raggiungere con uscita autostrada Santa Maria Capua Vetere Sant'angelo in formis
