Took the train from Rome to Naples and the short commuter train to Ercolano. A 5 minute walk down the hill and you can step back 2500 years into the bustling world of ancient Herculaneum. Make sure you hire an audio guide, which is very good, or you'll not be able to fully appreciate the sight. The most fascinating thing we did on our trip. Be sure to check out the Archeological Museum in Naples to see the original frescoes and mosaics.

Amazing, we returned to view again. Definitely not to be missed - good wall paintings and complete buildings.

We combined our visit to Ercolano Scavi with a hike up the Vesuvius. The city itself is very easy to be reached by train, after that it is a short (10/15 min walk) up to the excavation site.Walking around, we were quite impressed by the good state of several of the buildings at the site as well as the details that were still maintained and that could be viewed (such as fresco's and mosaic tiling). Also a plus is that you can explore the site yourself and do not have to take a mandatory guided tour. All in all, it was quite an impressive site (especially with the Vesuvius still looming in the background and the thought that an explosion of the very same vulcano buried the entire Ercolano city so many year ago). Entrance fees are quite steep (EUR 12 pp) but well worth it.

If you have just one ancient site to visit in Campania - Make it Herculaneum! It is better preserved than Pompeii, and involves less walking and more visiting different buildings within the ancient city.

We last came here 30 years ago and since then a lot more care is being taken of these amazing relics. It is a lot smaller than Pompeii - even so we were wandering the streets for at least 4 hours and were totally engrossed. Get the audio to go round and follow the numbers in sequence. The Roman baths here are the best preserved I have seen. A lot of work is still being done to preserve this site as in Pompeii, so don't be too disappointed if you can't get in everywhere. This is an amazing step back in time to immerse yourself in for a few hours.

Went to visit this site as I was advised it was much better than Pompei and it worked out to be one of the best visits I have ever made take the train to Ercolano and its a 10 minute walk to the site. The cost of a guide sounds expensive at 40 euros but it is worth every euro. We had a young archaeologist who made the visit very memorable by being able to point out and explain things you would have missed if you tour on your own.Wonderfully preserved structures murals mosaic and the buildings contained original items still as they were found. Don't miss out on this trip.

We went in February, and, even then the train (Circumvesuviana) was packed, so be prepared to stand for 20 mins. There's a 10 min. walk downhill to the site (so remember it's uphill on the way back!). There's no café, (just vending machines). The site itself is, of course, fantastic, and there were hardly any visitors. As it's small, it's a lot more manageable than Pompeii. However, lots of the buildings were closed.

I'm the type who loves castle ruins, archaeology, and history in general. This place was like a playground for me. Many of the buildings here still had furniture inside, and most still had the original artwork on the walls including some of the most beautiful tile-murals. There are some great documentaries about this site which are helpful to put into perspective how people here lived. It's amazing to think that the peoples' quality of life in these days was unmatched until recent times.

We visited this site on the awy back to Naples from Sorrento. Compared with Pompeii it is much smaller and two hours is sufficient to see all that is available. There were not many visitors to be seen during our stay. We were surprised by this. The audio guides are average as is found at many similar attractions. It is very easy to get around the site. The issue that we found is the same at many sites in Italy and Greece. There is a lack of clear signs and information that makes it easy to find your way around and to be clear what you are actually looking at. I was told by a friend that Herculaneum was far better than Pompeii, but overall I thank it is on a par

Couldn't believe just how well preserved this place is! The audio guide isn't the best, and the dudes voice is quite annoying after a while, but to be honest it was a good introduction and if I am honest, I am glad I bought the guide :) €6 for one €10 for two....you need to leave some Id and collect it when returning the guide. What you see here is fascinating. A true feel of how life was for the Romans...and also the skeleton's lieing next to the ancient beach.....don't want to spoil it for you though! The best food we had in the 3 days in campania was in the little rresturant at the far end of the car park. You have to go up some spiral staircase (health and safety would've closed the stairs in the UK lol) but trust me, the food is the absolute business. A simple caprese and pasta, good pizza......mamma Mia!
