With a history going back to 1737 and having Rossini and Donizetti as former artistic directors, the San Carlo has a superb tradition, especially in bel canto repertoire.Worth visiting no matter when the opera is Italian or not. The orchestra is excellent. The seats in the parterre section are also the most comfortable and spacious of any of the major opera houses in the world.
Dazzling interior on red, silver and ivory. Excellent acoustics,Saw Il Trovatore. Not quite up to Met standards but delightful.
To see the theatre, other than for a performance, you have to take the tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable. The theatre itself is wonderful. You can imagine it lit with candles and 18th century theatre goers all dressed up.
The greatest and most beautiful Theatre in Europe.Without a doubt the atmosphere is splendid, history all around the theatre. THE BEST!
San Carlo is excellent, very nice , and the sound is fantastic.A memeorable experience for me and a leggendary Theatre, I saw the Trovatore of Verdi and it was fantastic
We saw Tristan and Isolde conducted by Zubin Mehta. A very long opera. But the experience of being in the oldest opera house in Europe...gilt and plush red...box seats on all the upper levels, so you can lean over and snooze thru the loooong second act...was divine.
The oldest still active opera house in the world.Very well organised tour with a very professional guide.I learned a lot during this tour...like from where comes the word "conservator"
We were fortunate enough to have attended the Opera while in Naples. Wagoners Tristan and Isolde was being performed on. Sunday evening so we went to the box office Saturday to purchase tickets. The Opera house itself is magnificent and the performance, although 5 hours long, was spectacular. We purchase tickets on the first level for €100. Not inexpensive by any means. Although it was a novelty to sit in the boxes, the seats were very uncomfortable and the box was stuffy. There are 9 chairs in the box and I have no idea how that many people would fit. There were five in ours and it was tight.maldo,my here is no way for some to see the stage had three more people been in with us. My recommendation would be to spring for orchestra seats. If that's not in the budget, get a box as close to the center as possible. That being said, the performance was top quality and the very large orchestra was outstanding.Unfortunately, the opera was I German and the subtitles in Italian, neither of which we understood! Reading the synopsis on Wikipedia before each act helped us understand the play.We walked to the theatre from our hotel down by the water, but were able to get a taxi back for €8 as we didn't want to walk at midnight. There is a palace attached to the theatre which is worth visiting during the day. Audio guide takes you through about 30 rooms.
we took a tour of the Teatro. We were surprised since we hadn't heard about it before, or of the mass of theatre building in Naples at all. we never registered that Naples had theatre, opera and music. the theatre is splendid, the guide was great. it was all wonderful
We visited Teatro di San Carlo using their guided tour. The quality of the tour is fine and is bilingual (English and Italian). The theater itself is impressive and so is its story, being the oldest one still functional in Europe. It has marvelous decorations an lodges organised on 6 floors as well as a royal lodge located in the center. Each one of the other lodges has a mirror directed to the royal one, so that the guests could see when the royal family entered or when they started applauding.
