Everyone should ride in this tram at list once. There is so cute and unrepeatable experience, and ticket is so cheap. Enjoy this!
I couldn't miss the old No 2 tram parked up at a terminal stop right outside the Albergo alla Posta hotel on the night we arrived. To my amusement it turned out to be the very tram I wanted to ride up to Opicina and I enjoyed the ride very much. Much has already been said about the panoramic views of the lower city and port so I'll concentrate on the fact that it only costs 1.30 euros and eventually stops at the Tramway cafe near the sheds where a coffee costs only 1 euro. This will be necessary if you visit in winter and the icy Bora is blowing. Perhaps on a lucky day you could have a look at the sheds but I do not know this for certain.I like the idea that as well as being an attraction it forms a necessary part of the city's transport system for local residents. Everyone should ride on it at least once.
Yes please take a ride back in history on this very old tram. The ride has some very steep sections and offer some great views. A must do in Trieste
Had the opportunity to take the tram from Trieste to Villa Opicina and it was a great "short" trip - the views were break taking and it was a great way to make the trip. Its well worth the very modest price of just over 1 Euro.
Our beloved cable car is now running again. SO do not miss this beautiful "promenade", enjoy the view and experience an original last century trip.
Well we ran for the tram we saw one leaving the station in late July, August 2014 this year as we had planned to take the cross-country trip from Venice in to Slovenia. I tried to get a photo but my phone wouldn't load fast enough so I missed it completely which made me really sad. We asked when the next one would be in but we were told the one that just left was one being repaired or doing repairs and that it wasn't running! So we had to get the stinkin' bus up the mountainside :( Which is still nice but nowhere near as nice as I imagine the tram to be.
The Opicina Tramway is a wonderful way to move from the lower levels of Trieste to Opicina where there are magnificent views of the city below and the beautiful Gulf of Trieste. The cost is very modest and well worth the experience. It is not just for tourists though, but is a vital part of the city's transport infrastructure that was sorely missed when it was out of action for a substantial length of time! We were in Trieste in October 2013 also and it had not been running. There were many celebrations when it went back into service last month!
If you are in Trieste this tram is a must it was built in the early 20th century if you buy a ticket 1.3 euros and return within 1 hour that's free but there is a little town above called. Opicina it,s worth a visit especially the large bar just below the terminus get a drink and help yourselves to free canapés they are delicious really all freshly made the tram almost immediately drives in front of a shunting trailor then is pulled up a 1 in 4 gradient one at top does the reverse it,s fascinating all done by cables and counterbalance I stood next to driver and videoed it the city is well worth a visit you could easily spend a week there (stop at residence Bonomo. we did) if anybody would like to know about this area I,m here to help by the way at Obelisco stop you can get off and see the marvellous view of this city ,ps there is a free camper stop nearby for motorhomers
1 - If love a tram ride soooo just do it!2 - Take the tram to the stop at the "Obelisco" (obelisk) point and enjoy the scenery.3 - Take the tram all the way to Opicina and have lunch in the small townWhat ever your fancy the tram will be there for you. It is just a fun thing to do and will not cost a lot. we went on a Sunday and the ticket cost is 1.30 Euro for four hours, time enough to go on any these plans there and back. Tickets can be purchased from the Tabachi at the tram stop. The Tourist office will direct you to the tram stop in the city.
My husband loves this tram as it so reminds him of his childhood. We rode it twenty years ago and again on our most recent visit. It's a historical gem and the ride and destination overlooking all of Trieste is a must do. It's a small piece of what Trieste once was and for all of the changes taking place in Trieste it's nice to have these little things that remain unchanged.
Yes, If you were excited about riding the famous Tram on your visit to Trieste, then you could be disappointed. It has not been working for some time and by what we have read in the local paper, it could be out for ever, as various authorities are arguing about who is responsible for the costs. This is a serious mistake on the part of " whoever" decides, as it has been a real tourist drawcard in the past and certainly would be in the future.
i am told that the view from Opicina is marvelous, but the tramway is still not running. They say they are working on it and that it will be running this summer but so far there is absolutely no evidence of any progress.
We travelled from Ljubljana to Villa Opicina to get the tram to Trieste but it was not in operation. As we were informed it is usually out of service for many months every year, so don't really count on it. The locals didn't know when it would be back to service again. As we did a similar route by taxi in the end, the route is amazing with scenic views of Trieste and the see. So if you are not in a hurry and the tram is in operation, just take it!!
By riding the Opicina tramway, you may enjoy an unusual funicular that reaches the highland surrounding Trieste. In summer, I suggest you to go from downtown and stop at the "Obelisco" (obelisk) point, where you have a wonderful view point. Even more interesting, a pedestrian path starts there that you can enjoy walking in the green for many kilometers, possibly having a picnic. If you like a more quiet option, you may continue up to the last stop and get some ice-cream or lunch at some of the restaurant close to there. Note that, once in a while, the tramway is not running for maintenance: double-check in advance its availability!
It's great to take a ride on the opicina tram to Trieste, the view is magnificent. I live only 15km from Opicina and I sometimes take my own kids and my pupils (I teach Italian at a primary school) to Treste by tram and they always love it. I hope it works soon.
