We stayed in Arezzo for just over a week, and loved being able to walk around the city. It is both ancient, with old walls and gates, as well as modern with plenty of department stores and other places to shop. Restaurants abound, and we love being able to participate in the Passeggiata each evening before dinner. We typically began near our hotel, the I Portici, and walked up and down to the Piazza Grande, which was just a nice distance prior to sitting down to eat. At the Piazza, which is the largest in Arezzo, we joined many others who were also taking the air. With a very slanted surface, it took some effort to walk up to it, and then around it. Going down was of course easier. There are a couple of upscale restaurants right in the Piazza area, as well as some nearby. The town itself has so many goods places to eat. Google some images of the piazza and notice all the shields of historical families. Beautiful! There are 2 churches in the piazza also, one that faces it and one that shows it back to the piazza. No worries at night, since the entire city is very safe.
Arrezo is a beatiful idyllic town with a very attractive and lively historical center. The main attraction is the Piazza Grande (Grand Square) the ressembles quite closely Siena's Piazza del Campo and it's close to the Duomo and the medieval fort. You can enjoy it best by sipping a coffee or dinning at the restaurants facing the square under the beautiful renaissance archade.
The square is well preserved and faces the back of the main church. It has several very good restaurants
Simply go there open minded, it is so cool and lovely speechless. Take your children and let them play around, enjoy itaian hospitality at its best and dream away!!!
When I went the piazza grande was quiet... Which was perfect opportunity to go and read all about what goes on there. Old style horse battles take place at certain point in the year... But is a beautiful place to go walk around and have a coffee after walking up to it. Has the typical Italian feel in this Tuscan city.
Spent one night in Arezzo and after a very good dinner, we walked around the lovely historic centre of Arezzo. Piazza Grande is definitely worth a visit !
This place could not be more medieval, transporting you back in time with banners draped from the buildings and a large well near the centre. A fantastic place to transport you back in time! Our second visit here.
Do you remember the Oscar awarded movie "Life is beautiful" ?This square takes you back into the past, into the history, into the arts of Italian grandeur
on our tuscany road trip we decided to cross over arezzo and finding piazza grande was a nice way to get to know the city. it is in the heart of the town and has all crafty, foodie stops.
The Piazza Grande is an amazing space unlike other piazzas we explored in Italy. The main square slopes steeply and is surrounded by the galleried apse of Santa Maria Della Pieve parish church, the 16 th century logge designed by Vasari, 8th century law courts, and the Gothic/Renaissance Palazzo Della Fraternita. Under Vasari' s gallery are lovely cafés perfect for a people watching break. For those of us that were fans of the Oscar winning Film " Life is Beautiful" the piazza is familiar as the film's location.
When we visited in both June and August 2014, they were setting up for a medieval jousting festival and Piazza Grande looked super impressive! I'm so disappointed that we missed the festival! This is a great spot to grab a bite to eat or a glass of vino and do some people watching. There's also some nice souveneir shops and lots of impressive architecture to admire! Worth a visit.
Lovely cafes, beautiful buildings, plenty of people to observe. There are numerous antique shops which are interesting.
A vibrant square with shelter from sun or rain under its great loggia. Great restaurants. The clock in the Palazzo die Fratelli is very ancient and worth a visit.
We stumbled upon the piazza by descending some very unassuming steps in the centre alleyway so we really did go "wow" when we saw where it led. Looks very much like a little Siena, but much less crowded.
It's a pretty big piazza. It's surrounded by some very impressive old buildings. It's also quite a slope, the first thing Americans might think of when laying out a plaza in a town is "get the laser levels and the Cat D9s out here and let's get this place level" but that obviously wasn't a priority for Arezzans back in the day. Whether you avoid the monthly flea market (first Sunday of the month and the preceding Saturday) or make a point of attending it depends on what you're up to. There's a fair bit of interesting stuff for sale.
