Wherever you are standing in the piazza, you can see all of your surroundings--even if it is crowded and you are not particularly tall. The design is genius. There's a lot of political history just in this very town center. It's a great place to read, people watch, and take a nap in the sun.
Just a wonderful square, filled with people and excitment and apparently the best Ice Cream shop in Italy!. Just to stand in the middle of the square and look around at all the history is just amazing. It is filled with cafe where you can sit and watch the "world go by". Wonderful experience
Grab a drink or gelato and sit in a balcony of a restaurant or cafe and watch the world pass by on this famous square.
We were here for the Palio horse race last year and it was incredible! The town comes to life as each contrade or neighbourhood dresses up in their colours and chants their victory song. I've never seen anything like that before. Every day there are races on in the main square, if you don't have tickets for seats around the outside or window seats which are between €250-€750 you can shuffle into the middle of the square which is what we did. We were in there for a couple of hours but the race only goes for 2mins. By the end we had made friends with locals around us, though we don't speak Italian nor they English, but we have good memories that we will have forever. The streets at night are swarming with people just enjoying the atmosphere. It was fun just to walk around after dinner and take it all in. There isn't much accommodation if you are passing through and trying you luck at that time of year...we were there from 1st -4th July. We booked our accomm about 5months in advance and we stayed about 2min walk from Campo Di Fiore. I'd recommend going to one of the contrade dinners where you go to one of the neighbourhoods and sit at long tables and enjoy the local cuisine together.
Huge piazza in the centre of gorgeous Siena. I bought the €10 ticket to climb the bell tower (which I thought was a bit pricy, but the view was amazing) on a sunny day and the view is really spectacular. You can see a full 360 degrees and enjoy a birds eye view of the piazza, the cobbled streets below, and the duomo too.The piazza is lovely to walk around, have a coffee or beer in one of the cafes, and enjoy the atmosphere.
Go to siena and its a 100% to go to the famous Piazza del Palio!Make plans to go where de Palio happens (twice a year).
Just lie down and watch the sky! Simply the best thing is stay here, sit and enjoy a beer with your friends/partner.
Wonderful, huge piazza to hang out any time of the day or evening and marvel at the beauty surrounding it! Grab a couple of beers or anything you like and choose a spot on this slopy piazza. Perfection lies in the simplest of things!
Alas, they weren't having the horse race on the day we were there, but the large, sloped piazza is a dramatic sight even when it's nearly empty. There's a real medieval feel to the place and its simple beauty is an integral part of what gives Siena its charm. The buildings offer modest shopping.
