I hiked up the mountain from Gaetavecchia with my mother, and came down via the Sanctuary. There are a lot of great aspects to this park. You pass through both modern and ancient history, geographic wonders, and natural beauty. There are a number of spectacular views of the sea, of Gaetavecchia, and of Elena (the modern expansion of the city, once a separate town of the aforementioned name). The Mausoleum at the top is a so-so visit; it might be better to visit on weekends, when the place is open, and you can go in.The one down side is that the place needs better service. I happened to ask a park ranger if there was a bathroom, and he said there was, but that it was open only on weekends, when they open the museum. I passed a port-a-potty (or whatever they're called) and managed to notice there was no paper before I tried using it. Once I arrived at the sanctuary, I also discovered that there was no paper in their toilets, either. The port-a-potty I kind of understand, and I don't mind paying for the paper at the sanctuary (0.25€ for a pack of facial tissue which serves OK as toilet paper) but I suspect some people might appreciate a warning sign before finding themselves in dire straits. It took us several hours to go up & down. Note that there is no fee unless you want to enter some of the sanctuary's attractions, which carry a modest fee (1€ per adult). They're definitely worth the fee.
i visited la montagna spaccata in late august with my two young children. FANTASTICwe enjoyed looking around all the areas, church, stations of the cross, the grotto.be prepared to walk lots of stairs to the bottom but its well worth it great for taking pictures.you feel like you have descended into another dimension kids loved it.best of all this attraction is free (donations please)
It's a good place to climb on. From here you can see excellent city- and seaview, can take good shoots. Better to go on a mountain early morning or in the evening - at this time the sun don't shines so bright and it's not so hot here
Enjoy a stupendous view of Gaeta and see ancient history. Split Mountain offers great photo opportunities, so take a camera.
This site was gorgeous. I was having back issues so I didn't attempt the climb down the steps thru the split. But the church at the top was charming and the legend behind the split is amazing. Saw the split from the top of the mountain and also from a boat. For those who don't know the story, legend had it that when Christ died on the cross, there was an eearthquake in Gaeta that split the mountain n half. Well worth a visit.
We made a special stop in Gaeta to see this attraction. The entrance to see Turk's Grotto was closed the hour that we went, so we went for a quick hike up the Montagna Spaccata trail. We did not go very far, and it was nice to see the views below, but what we saw was not that impressive compared to the beauty we experienced in other parts of Italy. Perhaps a longer hike would have been more fruitful.Once the entrance opened, we paid 1 Euro each and walked down the many steps to see Turks Grotto, at least a hundred I believe. You may want to bring some bug spray for the visit. It was very nice and an interesting geological formation, but seemed to be a bit uneventful once we were there for a little while. Lots of steps again walking up with an interesting view of the cave below. I am glad that I saw it, but I'm not sure it was worth a special stop since it took time away from other sights we would have had more time to visit. To the right of the church that is in front of the entrance, there are bathrooms.I think if I didn't know it was there, and I stumbled upon it, I would be amazed by it. But, since I had a high expectation of the sight, it didn't deliver exactly what I wanted, but I enjoyed the unique nature of the visit. Something I had never seen before.
going there,do not loose your time and go straight to the Parco Orlando....you will spend a full day, there, because it is just a fantastic place for walking and have a rest in the nature.
Easy drive from hotel. Neat experience and views. Well worth 1 Euro admission. Eagle eye view of beach below. Off season
This is really nice place whit perfect landscapes! You can also visit Grotta del Turco here or try freeclibing or diving as well. But for me was best that surroundings! Recommend to visit.
I agree with recent reviews: This is a place worth looking at. The 1 euro entrance fee for the Grotto del Turko is a valuable investment. I didn' like the many gift shops at the entrance selling nonsense, On the way to the Montagna Spaccata there's a nice overlook of Serapo beach, the main beach of Gaeta. Also consider to take Montagna Spaccata as a starting point for a hike over the mountain to the old town of Gaeta. Takes about 1-2 hours.
Very impressive. To be visited without doubtIt is much more impressive in real as it is on the photoClose to this place, you have the possibility to visit also the "grotta del Turcho" for 1 euro and it is recommended
In my opinion, this is the most astonishing place to visit at Gaeta, this being such a rare, natural attraction for everyone. Actually, this mountain shows a great split at its core, up to the Turk’s Grotto from which it is possible to catch sight of a stunning portion of bright blue see between the two sides of the mountain. According to an ancient legend, this split occurred on the occasion of Christ’s death, when the veil of the holy temple in Jerusalem was torn in two. The Sanctuary is very small and shows an essential architectural structure but it cannot be neglected, this being part of the whole area. Climbing down the stairs, the imprint of the Turk’s hand and St. Filippo Neri’s bed, which is made of rock, can be found. Don’t miss this jewel and the path into the nearby grove.
Found this place when we were at a bit of a loose end one day as to what to do. It is really peaceful and very lovely here. We arrived late morning, just as they were closing for a siesta. It is closed between 12 and 3pm, like many places in Italy. We stopped to get lunch at the restaurant nearby (which was overpriced and a bit mediocre), then had a walk in the Parc Nationale nearby to kill some time. This was very nice, and worth doing - as it's in the trees it is well shaded so nice and cool. The chapel in the rocks was very cool, and it is very worth the one euro entry to the Turk's Grotto, which is stunning and really makes you feel very small! Got a touch of vertigo on the way down/up because of the sheer scale of the cliff around us, but was sooo lovely down there I would definitely recommend it.
near the city of GAETA and on the mountains, is located this attraction. The rocks are devided and a narrow path is visible. With the 35 steps that had been contructed you can visit the lower part with a breath taking view to the sea from 50 meters height
We were just there last week and it was just so amazing to see and to know the story of the mountain. We loved everything about it! A must see!
