The Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere is a hidden gem in Rome. It Is actually the oldest worshiping Christian community, going back to the time of Saints Peter and Paul when they were in Rome. It is in a lovely part of Rome with nice restaurants and cafes nearby. The mosaics are some of the best ones in Rome. When I was in Rome for 7 weeks, I wanted to go see my favorite churches one last time on my last day there. I went to Saint Peter's Basilica, Santa Maria sopra Minerva and this one!! It is an absolute gem!
Relatively simple exterior, but an amazing interior. the many pictures one can watch on web, are not presenting the beauty of this church. every element in the interior is beautiful, and leave deep impression on visitor. We visited the place during evening, and the facade is beautiful. I strongly recommend to visit during day and night.
The atmosphere, the wonderful art and the sense of catholic history is flowing out of this magnificent church. Another must-see in Rome.
A lovely church with nice architecture and paintings/statutes inside. Very quiet both in church and square outside. Liked the stones making up the entrance wall with what looks like old graffitti on.
The centerpiece of Travestere literally and figuratively. An important and gorgeous representation of almost 1,000 years of architecture and art. If you can, visit on Sunday during a mass.
This little square became my favourite place in Rome after I had some wonderful moments there every time passing it. It seems quiet and rather insignificant but somehow it collects those precious moments we all can witness if we stop for a short while. A girl feeding the birds, a dog trying to attract her attention, a group of students sitting on the steps of the fountain and drawing the buildings surrounding the square, couples passing by, ocassional tourists looking at the maps, owners of the cafes looking for clients, old ladies sitting at the entrance to the church and buongiorning you no matter how many times you pass them during the day. It's all gathered there and it's simply magic. I guess we all have special places like this, and I hope you find yours.
Definitely a must see in a great neighborhood. Pope Innocent is also buried here. Quieter destination, a bit off the beaten path, but worth the detour.
If you find yourself in Trastevere to grab a bite (strongly recommended), don't miss the opportunity to visit this church. From the outside, you have no idea how beautiful it truly is. Worth the visit!
Situated in a corner of Piazza Santa Maria, around which are a number of restaurants, it is one of Rome's oldest churches and undoubtedly one of the most beautiful. Inside, it has a very serene atmosphere, assisted by being quite dark. There are many small chapels to either side of the nave, each with their own character and features. Decorations behind and above the main altar, including a magnificent mosaic are particularly special. This is definitely worth a visit for something different from most of Rome's other churches and as the centrepiece of a wander around Trastevere.
another good church to visit if you enjoy sight seeeing!!!magnificent like all!!and in the middle of the square!!
