Beautiful white stone town centre around a gorgeous harbour, Great food too. Quite a big town with ugly outskirts though and very busy traffic, difficult to negotiate without good map.
This was a lovely little place to visit. We were there early in the morning and the light was beautiful. It was so tranquil walking along the harbour wall but the town was lively and interesting with lots of restaurants and bars. Highly recommended
the wonderful church near the water -you have to go up to the second floor its amasing nice and speical
The old part of Trani was really a surprise. With its white stone buildings in the square, the castle at the edge of the sea, the amazing cathedral and lovely port, an ideal day out. Take a stroll along the marina with its restaurants and bars. Walking along the narrow streets you see the Jewish quarter and the interesting Romanesque church of Ognissanti built in the Xll century. This church was believed to be a meeting point for the Knights Templar before setting off for the crusades.
My husband and I spent a day at Trani, which is more than enough and it was beautiful, clean and very relaxing, especially when dinning near the marina, food is lovely. I would suggest going during the week, we went on a Sunday and the city was packed with people which makes it harder to find a table in a restaurant. I would defiantly like to visit again. Real attractions are near the Marina.
Trani is simply charming. With a unique setting by the water's edge, its majestic cathedral of San Nicola Pelligrino built of the local dazzling white stone is not to be missed. Everywhere you go, the campanile draws the eye. Photo opportunities abound in all directions. The Chiesa di Ognissanti built by the Knights Templar as a chapel for the adjoining hospital is another gem worth visiting. There is little by way of a sandy beach in Trani but this does not stop local families from sunbathing on the rocky shores of this old fishing port and swimming from there. The water felt very warm when we visited Trani at the end of June.Half an hour away by train is Bari with its splendid Basilica di San Nicola which was built in 1087 to house the relics of St Nicholas of Myra. View its facade from the Lungomare; what a sight for medieval seafarers and Crusaders. Look out for the episcopal throne or cathedra of Elias, Abbot of San Nicola and Archbishop of Bari. Sculpted from a single slab of white marble in 1098, this is a masterpiece of Italian Romanesque sculpture. Note the fine details of the facial expressions of the figures supporting the seat and their garments as well as symbols of Christian iconography on the bas-relief band on the edge of the seat.Bari Cathedral is another mighty Romanesque church of Apulia which is well worth a visit.
If you get the chance to pass through for a day make sure you do! Bellissimo! Perfect for a romantic dinner or lunch by the sea
My wife and I were holidaying mainly in and around Lecce with its beautiful baroque architecture. On our way back home we stopped off in Trani, a town full of history and architecture nobody visiting Apulia should miss.Trani is no doubt my favourite of Apulian towns and is full of a jewel of wonderful Romanesque architecture which brings together east and west styles with its pure lines, high arches and lovely clear biege/pink stone, which I prefer over the more complicated flowery baroque.First and foremost is the cathedral dedicated to St Nicholas which dated back nearly a thousand years then there is St Andrew’s and St Francis ……. I leave the rest to be discovered or rediscovered by visitors themselves or if they are as lucky as my wife and I with friends from Trani.A stroll around the port area is also recommended. Also of interest is the monument to the "Ordinamenta et consuetudo maris" which is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, maritime codes.
Romantic and peaceful place. good restaurants: sword fish, orachiette and torta della nonna highly recommended
Trani is really gorgeous. The port is both a fishing and pleasure boat port, and it has a great atmosphere. The old city is interesting and the Cathedral magnificent.. Don't miss the seaside Villa Communale, a wonderful public garden with a turtle pond and fountain, aviary, and bandstand. Seriously, possibly the best public garden in Italy.
Beautiful town with an amazing castle and cathedral. Easy toget there by train and very cheap. It onle cost us E 5.00
Diificult to find parking especially in the summer evenings but if you do get lucky, then do take the time to have a walk about and enjoy the sights.Wonderful vibrant place to have dinner, a cocktail, a beer or just a walk - day or night!. Suitable for couples, families, friends and even on your own.
Actually, we visited the place by chance. We arrived late at hour hotel and were planning to visit another place, but it was late and we were tired, so we drove for about 40 minutes and arrived at the Lungomare in Trani, and were immediately captivated by this town. The Lungomare is a park by the sea, a few hundred meters south of the old port. It provides a very nice stroll. We then returned to the old port and the beautifully restored and well kept old buildings, which were a refreshing view compared to the run-down ancient buildings in too many Italian towns. We walked along the long breakwater, right up to the green lighthouse, and were rewarded with a nice panoramic view of the old town and port.We then strolled for a couple of hours along the seafront and between the maze of alleys. The seafront is full of very nice restaurants - just remember to reserve a place beforehand - and to check the opening hours.Bottom line - we had a great time here, I wish we could have spent an additional 2-3 hours. But it was late, we were tired after a long day - and we had to wake early in order to drive to the airport.Highly recommended.
Don't miss to visit this wonderful place on Apulia's adriatic coast, north of Bari. From old little streets facing the harbour till the dramatically masterpiece of Romanic art . the Cathedral - with it's high belltower - all bring you to middle age time. From this port crusaders left to Palestina to move war to muslim in Holylands.
When in Puglia, if you are around Gargano, Ostuni, in adriatico coast, don't forget to visit Trani. Beautiful city on the sea, whit great churches, garden, port, and extremely clean and quietly.puglia, we love you!!!!
