It is fascinating to see the remains from earlier periods that have been uncovered under the cathedral.
We were on our way out of the crypt when we saw the entry. We almost didn't go in. That would have been a huge mistake. The excavations and archeological remains under the cathedral are astounding. It really pushes home just how old the site is and how many things have been built over each other. It really is a journey back in time. Worth twice the price of admission at least.
Right beneath the main church, this treasure reveals hundreds of years of history, from the time it was part of a Roman empire road, to its becoming an ancient Latin, then Byzantine, then Medieval, Church, before the more modern Church was built over it. What impressed me most was the painstaking, scholarly archeological research done, and the presentation of its discoveries in an excellent lay-out.
la cattedrale di Bari non poträ mai piacere ad un non amante dell´arte. il romanico ´´stile bistrattato´´ spesso e volentieri trova in questa chiesa un esempio splendido. ormai spogliata nel corpo principale della veste barocca, si possono ben notare i matronei , il soffitto ligneo. ancor piü bella a mio parere e´ il succorpo che mantiene ancora la sua veste barocca. the cathedral of Bari will never please those who do not appreciate art. the Romanesque style'' mistreated'' often is in this church a splendid example. now stripped in the main body of the Baroque style, you can clearly see the galleries, the wooden ceiling.Even more beautiful in my opinion and 'the-body in that it still retains its Baroque style.
Bari is a walkable city. Enter through the white lacy entrance near the waterfront. to go into the Old City. The port ruins are spectacular but they charge you 10 euros to walk along the city wall. The Basilica contains St Nicolas' tomb and is a well known pilgrimage site. Lots of cafes everywhere, reasonably priced and a Sunday market on the Waterfront.
The Succorpo museum at the Bari Cathedral is one of the best-executed historic sites I've visited. Before there was a cathedral in Bari, there was a fifth-century Christian basilica, a very early Christian chapel, and a large Roman structure of some sort on the same site. Since the cathedral was built on the same site as so many other important buildings, archaeologists working in the cathedral basement were able to uncover remnants of all the aforementioned buildings that came before, including a beautiful early Christian terazzo floor and a tiny Christian chapel with an early altar. The signage (in both Italian and English) does a great job explaining how the carefully-exposed and restored walls, floors, and other structures related to the earlier buildings. This was much more educational and interesting than other early Roman and Christian sites that I've visited. For just a few Euro, it's certainly worth a visit.
I resti bizantini. .. i mosaici... tutto molto bello da vedere!!
