The main thing you are coming to this church to see is the Madonna della Madia. Make sure you do not come when a mass is being conducted. Facing the alter, go down the aisle along the right side of the nave. Just before you reach the end of the aisle, there are large displays explaining the miracle of the Madonna della Madia. They are in both Italian and English. Make sure you read this information. Continue on until you reach the stairs. Go up these stairs to reach the area where the Madonna is displayed. Be respectful because people are often praying here. After viewing the Madonna, with your back to her, walk to the railing and look out into this beautiful church. It is a wonderful sight.On a side note. As you exit the Cathedral, turn right. When you reach the street, turn right. After a very short distance you will arrive at Chiesa S. Maria del Suffragio (Purgatory) on the left side of the street. I have only found this church open once, and they would not let me in. But facing the front door of the church, look in the windows on the left. On the left side of the room are display cabinets with skeletons dressed in what looks like military uniforms. You really have to look in at an angle to see them. I have read that these are the skeletons of eight brothers who were buried in the church. I do not know if this is true or not. But if so, why were they dug up and now displaced in military uniforms? Kind of interesting and spooky to see.

The Monopoli Cathedral (Chiesa Cattedrale Maria Ss. Della Madia) is a Romanesque, 17th century Cathedral featuring outstanding Baroque archteticure that is maybe a 10-minute walk from the old town seaport and Charles V Castle at Largo Cattedrale and Via Nicodemo Argento. It is a must see visit. The entire marble interior of this Cathedral including the floor in addition to several altar's is a breath-taking sight. There are not any English language information brochures that describe the paintings, art work and a 13th century icon but just standing or taking a seat in a pew is worth the sight, especially the ceiling and cupola.

The church made up of tufa, is divided into three naves that end in three semicircular apses............you have to visit it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Monopoli is a gorgeous little fishing town and even if you're all 'churched out' after a trip round Puglia, please visit this Basilica. As the lady sweeping the steps on opening the doors welcomed us to come in, it just took my breath away! So beautiful and it is obviously loved and cherished by the people of Monopoli, as when we were later at the harbour a gentleman obviously saw I was a tourist and rattled away in Italian that I must see the Basillica, and thankfully we had.

It`s a great working church. Many weddings we saw there! And it could be on of the point you can see from differenr plfcts and understan where you are.

No words can describe the amazing inside of this Cathedral, there's too much beauty!Definitely worth a visit!

Wonderful old city, with narrow streets, a busy fishing harbour, friendly people, nice views, great food and drinks everywhere. You have to get used to the Southern Italian timings, as in almost everything shuts down at 1am, and comes back to life from about 6.30 or 7 pm.

Linda igreja...fiquei impressionada com o seu interior todo em mármore! Depois da visita à basílica, caminhe até o porto e veja lindas casas altas medievais.

È uno dei punti focali di questa magnifica città. Rimmarrete incantati per la sua maestosità e bellezza dei marmi di cui e abbellita, per non parlare della Madonna della Madia, protrettrice della città, dove il quadro originale è custodito dietro diverse lastre di vetro nella parte superiore della chiesa.

La basilica cattedrale, grazie ai restauri degli ultimi anni, immerge in un'atmosfera sontuosa ma allo stesso tempo sobria, con un clima che invita a lodare Dio e a rivolgere gli occhi al centro verso la venerata icona della patrona Maria SS. della Madia.

Molto particolare, suggestiva la scalinata che porta al quadro della Madonna. In pieno centro storico. Luogo spirituale di notevole valore archittettonico che valorizza ancor di più una città meravigliosa. Da visitare

La cattedrale è molto bella ed interessante da visitare. Mi sono piaciuti gli affreschi e la storia di come è stata terminata.

Nella splendida basilica ho atteso la mezzanotte, un intonato coro accompagnato da un arpa. tra affreschi, colonne di marmo, statue, altari, cupole, ori... quasi rapito da cotanta arte in armonia con dei fedeli ordinati e il sacerdote. Una Chiesa che trasmette Cristianità. quei valori di Amore e pace che ci contraddistingue. sempre consigliata la visita.

Basilica concattedrale di Maria Santissima della Madia, veneratissima nella città. Sorge nel centro antico di Monopoli in una zona di antiche e complesse stratificazioni temporali che, partendo dal 4500 a.C. circa, giungono fino ai nostri giorni. In seguito agli scavi del 1986 furono rinvenute tracce dell'età del bronzo.

La Madonna della Madia è un'icona preziosissima proveniente da Bisanzio, attorno alla quale è sorta la Cattedrale e tutta la città. All'interno della Cattedrale marmi di ogni foggia rendono unico lo spazio per i fedeli e i visitatori, mentre il Santuario all'interno della Cattedrale ospita l'icona con sculture in marmo, argento e oro davvero affascinanti e preziose. Da poco restaurati i dipinti a olio raffiguranti l'arrivo dell'icona e delle 12 travi che consentirono la fondazione della Basilica 1000 anni fa.
