In June I agreed on a price for two nights for three groups of 60 people. I confirmed this again in September. Late October i heard that for one of the groups. They had just accepted a large party of Americans coming for their wedding.Obviously the management has made an error. Logically, the first booking prevails. But this is not obvious at Castello di Compiano. Since we have the oldest booking, we will just be showing up and seeing how they solve it. Might be a messy wedding for the Americans end of May.

We had a somewhat odd experience at Compiano. We arrived at 17:45, plenty early for the last guided tour at 18:30. When we walked into the reception area there was nobody there. So we walked around in the castle looking for someone. Not a soul, not even in the restaurant which was closed. Now we were really puzzled as there is a Relais hotel in the rooms on the top floor of the castle. Then we walked down the hill into the charming village. It was like being in a ghost town. We were about to leave when I thought to go back to the reception desk at the castle. There was a rude woman at the desk who seemed annoyed that we were there. She did not to speak English, but I was able to gather that there would be a guide at 18:30. Anyway, there is a happy ending. The guide was a young man who spoke very good English (he is going to London for a year to study to become a translator). He gave us an excellent tour. Compiano wouldn't be to everyone's taste as it was redone by a wealthy countess between the 1960s and her death in 1987. So it is not historically correct, but she had fantastic collections from her world travels. I'm sure she had family money, but she also was an architect. One of her clients was Eva Perone in Argentina. The most unusual collection was three rooms of Free Mason's memorabilia. The collection was remarkable even though I have no particular interest in the Masonic orders. Our guide spent way more time with us than is usual, so I gave him a nice tip and told him to buy himself several pints when he gets to London.

When I visited this castle it was closed for repairs and renovation works but even outside of such events it has a very strange opening hours so be sure to check before you go. If by change you find it closed a beautiful drive is over the col towards Bedonia where you can still find some villages almost completely abandoned.

I have been to many of the castles in the Parma/Piacenza area and although this was not my favorite castle, it was definitely worth the visit. As with most of the castles in this area, you must take a guided tour (I believe that you can arrange a tour in English and possibly French if you contact them in advance). If you want a full experience, you can even stay and dine at the castle! Definitely also worth visiting the castle in Bardi as it is about a 40 minute drive away.

it is really a nice sight to see Compiano and its castle overlooking the Taro river valley. A walk through the town is absolutely worthwhile. Intersting is the visit of the castle, which has kept the furniture ( sometimes a bit dusty ) of the last owner

The castle was built in the 8th century which seems unbelievable when you look at it! As of July this year the castle is back for hire (conferences, weddings and etc) together with a hotel of 13 rooms. Very beautiful!
