We walked up to the amphitheatre, full of tourists and wet from a rainy day, but it was worth it. The view was amazing. It's hard to believe you are standing in a place so ancient. You look out all the way to the ocean and it looked like they must have performances there occasionally; it has rigging and lighting in place. Count your money when you buy your tickets, though. Another minor annoyance are the trinket sellers sitting on blankets near the entrance. They are everywhere in Taormina. The amphitheater makes a good backdrop for photos to remember your trip by. It's exquisite...even on a wet ugly day.(Less tourists!) Just walk carefully.
We visited the Amphitheater in Taormina while visiting for the day. It's very interesting. The ruins are beautiful. Having just come from Rome, it was't as large scale as you might imagine it would be. But the real joy of visiting this site is the view of the rest of Taormina. We visited close to sunset and I took some of the most pretty pictures of our whole trip. Loved it!
Over 2500 years old and well preserved. The summer concerts are not to be missed. However even when nothing is playing go see it, but use a guide or proper language audio.
Must see when you visit Taormina. Very well preserved & restored ancient amphiatheater with wonderful birds-eye view of Taormina - Isola Bella and Giardini Naxos. The beauty of the view keeps you enjoy this place few hours.
it's E8, but well worth it. the views are amazing and the site is very well preserved. ............................................................................
This amphitheater is located within the city limits. Saying so, it takes 10 minutes of a very nice stroll around the city to reach it. During winter time, if the weather is cloudy, visitors will not enjoy the Etna view. However, Taormina's weather is always a surprise, and suddenly the weather clears up making a package attraction. It is better visting after noon.
We had wonderful experience visiting the Theater.I read so many negative comments on the usage of the theater - believe that it is great that it is well preserved and it is used for concerts! (similar to Irodio and Epidauros theaters in Greece). The view from at 360o was stunning, I believe that it is the best attraction in Sicily during our weekly trip.
This ancient theater is the second largest in Sicily (after the one in Syracuse). It originally had a seating capacity of 5000 seats. With the audience facing the sea and Mt. Etma, the performances must have been spectacular. Of course, when the Romans took it over, it was remodeled. There is disagreement what the theater was used for after that time. It certainly lends itself even today for concerts and plays.
