My husband and I are 69 and 59, and I only brought one pair of shoes (with a slight heel) on our trip to Sicily. We went all the way to the top of La Rocca with no trouble at all. It's basically a goat path after a certain point, with a couple of steep areas to step, but really not a problem, even with less than desirable shoes. I would have felt more secure with flatter shoes, but I was fine. It was well worth the trip: we brought a lunch and rewarded ourselves at the top. We were here in late February, with temps in the low 60s F, on a sunny day, and were plenty warm! We ran into a few other folks on the paths, but mostly were by ourselves this time of year. Highly recommended!
This might be too hot to do in the middle of a summer day, but we climbed it in the winter and it was not too much work. Interesting ruins at the top and some informative explanations in both Italian and English along the way.
La Rocca is the giant mount that overlooks the fantastic town of Cefalu. From the top the view is just simply amazing and has to be seen! We walked to the very top - started at 9am (got there for 7am but the park ranger doesnt open up until 9am!) and after about two and a half hours made it!.......take plenty of water! Not at all recomended for anyone who isnt sturdy on their feet and there is a couple of quite hairy moments along the edge. As its quite difficult (especially in the heat) I wont be reushing to do it again but so glad I can say that I have conquered La Rocca!
Very good, although going up and down was quite scary. You walk next to a sheer drop with no barriers in between you and the drop! It has a very nice view from the top, and there were many ruins to visit.
We looked forward to ascending to the top in the clarity of the afternoon sunshine. After getting our ‘passes’ we enjoyed the walk all the way. There were wonderful views over Cefalu, with the Duoma particularly standing out in its full extent. The fortress was fascinating in its expansiveness. The panoramas along the coast and of the deep blue bay were most impressive. It was interesting to see the geometrical shapes of the marinas. On the descent we visited the archaeological site, including the megalithic building area. Some of the legends were in English, which helped with the context.
Best view from top hill, not sure to the castle, because it was difficult to walk on many stones and climb hills. So to the point telling you --view point on the left and castle on the right, turn left. All what you need to see is there.Nothing to complain, just pity it is not well known and people do not want to go to the top?
fantastic views from the top but a gruelling walk to get there. 4 euros to punish yourself but worth it when you get to the top
I was a bit annoyed that our friends were going to be relaxing on the beach and my husband wanted to climb La Rocca. And yes, I whined most of the way up ( it's rather strenuous)... However, the view from the top is SPECTACULAR . Worth every step! Wear good shoes, take water, and you will NOT be disappointed!
Really this is quite an easy walk up the hill....for most reasonably fit folks less than 30 mins. I wore my Keene sandels and these worked just fine. The ruins are not much but the views are wonderful! We went first thing in the morning. They open at 0900. We were the only ones on top when we were there but ran into a wave of tourists coming up on the way down.
A great morning trip to strech your legs.Nice views, nature, trails, ruins, you name it.Costs about €5 or €8 per person though.
Yes, best to go early depending on what time of year could get hot. The views are nothing short of spectacular. I wish i had great pictures like many of the other travelers, but unfortunately for some reason our battery wouldn't allow. OH well
I liked the panorama one can enjoy once on the top. Do take a bottle of water on a hot day and make sure you use toilets before coming there as public toilets are nowhere to be found around there.
La Rocca is great to look at from town, but the view from the top (especially east and south) is even better. If you're in decent shape it won't take that long to climb, and it's worth paying the park entrance fee to go up. Good shoes are a must, and remember to bring water.
This was a good climb up. Don't wear sandals or thongs. We saw a woman in heels and a guy in thongs who didn't get far!Steep climb, well worth it for the views and good exercise too. Interesting history to the place - have a read before you go.
Don't wear sandals :)Well worth the 2 hour hike up this mountain for amazing views from all sides. At the top there are some ruins, sure, but they're nothing special compared to the gorgeous view.
