We were able to attend a noon-time concert with piano soloists and also an opera in the evening. The particular opera we saw had a great deal of dancing in it. Most enjoyable.
While the opera house is stupendous and the singing and orchestra was wonderful, I personally did not like the production one bit. We saw Orpheus and Eurydice, by Gluck, but it was in modern dress, and did not really work for me. Orfeo by Cocteau is in modern dress and works fine, but modern dance, and modern dress for Gluck, Yuck.
Last year, the two-week tour of northern Sicily had a few notable moments. One was this theater with its understated beauty and the vibrant Mozart symphony, and the chorus accompanying the formidable mezzo-soprano. The city may not yet fully grasp this theater's wonder, as it seems to slide by its awesome museum and the unique culture of its surrounding Greek and Roman temples and theaters. If in Palermo, find a way to this hall and dwell for a time, looking past the needed restoration to the fundamental beauty.
We had an English tour of the Teatro Massimo on a Tuesday right before noon. We were fortunate since they were practicing for the opera Orphee et Eurydice while our tour was going on. We were able to watch a portion from the back of the theater and then we were taken up to the President's box to take in more of the practice. The acoustics were fabulous. Such a nice small intimate theater - compared to the opera houses in the US. Too bad we are leaving before the opera starts later in February.
I visited Teatro massimo back in 2012 with my family (because of the godfather) and we really liked it, the building is impressive...especially the two lion statues at the entrance...we took some amazing pictures. I would love to watch a theatre piece in there.I would recommend anyone visiting Palermo to go there.
We went on a short guided tour, 40 minutes, and really enjoyed it. The opera house is magnificent, a sight to behold. The tours are in different languages so it's a good idea to book one in advance.
We looked around the Theatre. The people said it is third biggest theater of Europe. It is indeed fantastic outside looking. But when We bought a show ticket and got inside. It is a little bit disappointed. We can not easily watch the show, angle problem. The show is not interesting a little boring.
The Teatro Massimo Vittorio Emanuele is an opera house and opera company located on the Piazza Verdi in Palermo, Sicily. It was dedicated to King Victor Emanuel II.It is the biggest in Italy, and one of the largest of Europe (the third after the Opéra National de Paris and the K. K. Hof-Opernhaus in Vienna), renowned for its perfect acoustics. It's unimaginable in those times people built something like this. Classiness of this site begins from the outside and when you re inside you're in a different world. I suggest a guided tour as it will help you understand the place better. The final scenes of the famous movie Godfather were shot here. There is a spot inside the auditorium where if you stand and say something only you can here the reverberation. The room was intended to have large gatherings and people could have conversations no one could here as the voices would be reverberating. Amazing acoustics. We missed a performance there but next time will make up for it:) I am sure the opera must be mind blowing. Must visit!
Very special, worth the tour. It's only 25 minutes but it gives you a real look inside one of Europe's largest opera houses.
The Teatro Massimo, or Palermo's Opera House, is the largest in Italy and one of the largest in Europe. It was designed in 1864 and finished in 1897. In addition to a full season of Opera, ballet and other performances. We took the English language tour with only 5 people on the tour. It is a beautiful theater.
