The place is somehow creepy as you are driving past old buildings without windows or even walls. Eventually you get to the telescope which is used till now, but as there are some reconstruction going on tours are not being held till the spring of 2015. But you can hang around and take photos.
I heard of this place, and we drove out to investigate. The center was not open for visitors, but you could drive around, take photos, and visit the sites. This was a secret Cold War llistening post, and there are 5 story abandoned apartment buildings on the site, which look like they have been stripped of anything useful. We did get to see the telescope move. There are many abandoned and burned structure like guardhouses and such to photograph. This is a large, working radio telescope, and it is worth a visit. There should be a fee for a tour, after it re-opens. In the meantime, visit and take plenty of photos.
The object itself is unique and is still functioning. Must see.For those interested in military heritage of USSR, Irbene Radio Astronomy Center is an impressing place to visit. Big! Former Top Secret! Easy available now.
In the forests are hiding ex-soviet army giant military radio spying antenna, which is renewed, and is used by scientists! Excursions available on certain times of day, so please phone about that before, you must need a directions too, as it used to be top secret place, its not that easy to find. :) Great place to see, and wonderful feelings when climbed up to RT-32antenna.
Яркий пример конверсии - бывший военный обьект превращен в инструмент исследования космоса. Заброшенный городок по пути к телескопу также впечатляет. Рекомендую к просмотру всем кто интересуется наукой и историей.
