It has always been overshadowed by The Nidaros Cathedral. But the fact is that in many ways, The Church of Our Lady (Vår Frues kirke) is more beautiful in a simplistic kind of way.It is often mistaken by tourists for being the Cathedral they've read about in the guides, and theat can leave them disappoinited (quickly resolved when they see the ACTUAL cathedral later on, though). The Church of Our Lady was restored not that many years ago, amongst other thing, the original ceiling decoration was exposed and refurbished. It is a very beautiful thing. My absolute favourite part, though, is the fact that this church is open 24/7 year round to house and "warm" whomever is in need of it. If can't afford to pay, you get coffee, some food and a place to warm up. And it is run by volunteers! The police patrol here quite frequently because there are occational disputes amongst some of the visitors, but you shouldn't in any way be scared to visit. It is perfectly safe.

Our Lady's Church, Vår Frue kirke, is a medieval church, but today's interior is baroque. The church is open at all times offering a warm and dry shelter for the needy and homeless. There they can come, have a cup of coffee and something to eat, maybe lie down and have a nap on some of the back benches. Lots of people engage in voluntary work to make this possible. From November 28th to 30th the church was filled with song day and night for 60 hours. More than 200 choirs sang through the entire Norwegian book of psalms, all 899 of them. People sat in and listened for a while, then left and new ones came. 17000 people visited the church during those days. And all the time people could come in for coffee and rest at the back of the church. The church has a beautifully welcoming atmosphere which must be experienced.

This open church is shelter for poor people in Trondheim and is usually open from 9 am to 6 pm with extended hours some days. It is a very particular Christian church dedicated to virgin Mary that offers free coffee and tea with tables to seat, chat and read newspapers inside it. It is also a place to pray and light votive candles. It has a nice altar and an impressive organ. We recommend to visit this interesting church when you visit Trondheim.

Centrally location and the doors always open. A lovely welcoming sign inviting people in. They actually serve free teas and coffee there, for people to come in for a chat.

Small church near the nordre street in the center of the city. Possible to enter, no fee. This church is were alkoholics and drug addicts come to have a feww meals a week and were they can get clothes. Lots of people are always welcome to help out here.

The Church is not as large or as imposing as Nidarosdomen, but it is very warm and welcoming. The paintings around the altar are very impressive. This is an "Open Church" whose mission is to help those in need, whoever they may be. At the back of the Church, there are volunteers offering coffee or tea - free of charge - to all visitors. This Church is well worth visiting, and well worth supporting.

The Church of Our Lady or Var Frue has somehow survived for 800 years. It is on Kongens Gate very close to the town square. For history buffs if you walk down this street you will find some display panels describing other medieval churches which also once stood here. There was a Franciscan Friary - currently under the library and St Gregory or St Olav's church under a savings bank. You can visit the excavated remains when these two places are open.

The church has a colorful interior and while we were there, the attendants offered coffee to what looked like vagrants and homeless people. We don't speak Norvegian so maybe our interpretation is all wrong. But the interior is really pleasant and somehow 'cosy'.

This church is in the middle of city centre and doesn't look much compared to Nidarosdomen, but once you step inside, you are met with a welcoming and inviting atmosphere. The organ is very beautiful and the ornaments are very colorful and detailed. At the back of the church, volunteers serve free coffee/tea for anyone who visits the church. It is being run by Bymisjonen who wants to meet everyone with respect and friendliness, whomever you are, from wherever and in whatever situation you are.It is open most weekends in the night for the local homeless to have a couch to sleep on and serve lunch and dinner several times a week.It is also being a popular visit late evenings when the town has closed and people are waiting for the night bus home. The church itself is more than 800 years old and if you ask any of the volunteers, they know more about both the service they provide and the history of the church.I am proud to say that I volunteer there and we see many tourists popping in to light a candle, sit down and rest their legs for a few minutes and grab a coffee while having a chat and watching this beautiful church.A must visit if you are in Trondheim!

Always open, always welcoming. This is a place to have a quiet time during a busy day in Trondheim. The doors are always open, so you may have a cup of coffee or just look around inside the church.

Nice baroque church in the city centre. Bright and colourful interior. Information should be improved!

We wandered into Vår Frue Kirke on a walk round Trondheim. The plain exterior hides a remarkably ornate interior (well a mixture of mainly plain with over-the-top ornate in places). When we went in there was a small group in the middle of prayer/singing practice, and the cafe area at the back was being well used by local characters who needed some extra help. No-one seemed to mind us wandering in.Good to see it being well used after all this time

Midt i Tronheim sentrum står denne gamle steinkirka. Den er beskjeden inni, men har flott altertavle og preikestol. Er åpen for alle. Lite info i ne i kirka.
