We thought this was a nice place to stop for lunch with the opera hall overlooking the fjords. The opera hall itself is a weirdbut wonderful piece of architecture, well worth visiting and walking up to the top to get better view of the fjord. It was a celar day when we visited, and if you are in the area, it is well worth seeing.
The Oslofjord in summer, is a must! Grew up here in a boat-family, and there are many islands, protected water, marinas, resturants etc just next to the sea., most of them with free docking. Best tip would be; early, or late seson, take Your bout (or rent one) and just turn of Your engins a few natical miles out from Oslo, at night. enjoy the skyline from deck, With a glass of wine. Nobody will bother you, totaly relaxing Plenty of Fish also, and their all safe to eat. Find a small island, and have a barbecue!
When i move to Oslo i think the fjord was wonderful, but now after eleven years i think it get dirty and to many boats. But its still good , speciell on summer evenings.
Took friends out to Hovedøya. Allthough all the islands are worth a visit! Had a picnic down by the beach. A very likeable place. Interesting story about the Monastry ruins! Have also been there and visited the new, revamped cafe! Probably my favorite island! The cafe opens for the summer mid May, but you can have picnics there as soon as the ice on the fjord melts! Worth a visit.
I was lucky to be able to stay in Oslo three times at different periods of the year. I was staying at my son's and was lucky in that I got to live as a Norwegian. The city of Oslo is really beautiful and it has a beautiful waterfront where you can walk and enjoy all the restaurants with their outdoor terraces. People in Norway enjoy outside activities no matter the time of the year. They sit on heated terraces and enjoy their coffee in the middle of winter. I visited The Norwegian Museum of Cultural History and quite a few others, the Akhersus Castle which is a must, assisted to performances a the Opera House and went on a minicruise of the Oslo fjord. I was also lucky enough to be in Oslo for the national celebrations held in May. I am sure that I have not mentioned everything to do and visit in Oslo. You must go and experience the city for yourself. So happy to have spent a lot of time there!
This is one of the best places to see how nature and man can keep life peacefull. Try to go between Aker Brygge and Bigdoy by boat, you will adore!...
There was no guarantee of a boat trip on the Oslo fjords in February, but luckily the ice had broken up enough and we were able to hit the water. A two hour boat trip with an excellent tour guide was a great way to see the fjords. The water was so still, glass like with a thin layer of ice and much larger patches in more fresh water areas which were beautiful. Photos gave the illusion of a mirror image, the water so still reflecting the views of the islands. We really enjoyed the fjords, the views, the peace, the tranquility. If you're in Oslo a few hours well spent, one of my favourite parts of our stay.
When the water's calm you see the sky being reflected on it clearly it's almost like looking down at another sky. On a clear starry night or with the northern lights I can't imagine how amazing it would look then.
Seeing the Oslo Fjord from the water allows a different perspective. Something about the fjord with shorelines dotted with colorful houses, small and larger boats, lighthouses and water life, leaves a feeling of the pristine tranquility of the fjord. Beautiful blue with pristine shorelines and crisp cool air, a tour, cruise or a water trip causes you to see the blue skies, green forests and little red, yellow, blue, orange houses. From the Akershus Castle or Fortress, the view of the Oslo Fjord is impressive. You have a great vantage point from these heights. Seeing the fjord from the distance allows you to see the majesty of the fjord, whereas the water view from a water tour is much more tranquil as you see the sites close up . From the vantage point of the water tour, Oslo Fjord is very inviting and causes visitors to want to stay awhile and relax.
We had a great sunrise and since there was snow on the houses, roads and trees. Everything looked idyllic. Good some great photos. Then we sailed in to a bank of fog. Couldn't see a meter ahead. That's Mother Nature for you. Never know what's going to happen. On the other side of the fog was amazing sunshine and a great view of the harbour etc. If you are not with the cruise ship. Go to the harbour there are several ways to go out on the water and experience it up close by yourself.
We visited Oslo from Scotland in the last week of January 2015. This tour was something I was really looking forward too, and we managed to catch it on our last day in Oslo (as it only runs 3 days a week). In all honesty it was quite disappointing. Nice views, nice boat.... but 'nice' isn't really worth the hefty price tag (around £25 each in GBP). The tour was 2 hours long and we were thoroughly bored by 1 hour in (my husband fell asleep next to me). The guide was ok, give little bit of info now and again, nothing we hadn't already picked up from our previous 4 days of seeing Oslo. We were sitting on the right side of the boat, and as another review has mentioned, this is a big mistake. Everything you want to look at is on the left side of the boat. Make sure you sit on the left. The view from the harbor is more beautiful than most of the views from the boat, and that view is free.Perhaps if we had done this tour the first day of our trip, and had sat on the left, we might have enjoyed it more.
The Fjord of Oslo is quite nice, but I wouldn't spend money to go on a Fjord tour. My wife and I took a DFDS cruise from Copenhagen to Oslo. The cruise was quite nice, and I was anticipating the views of the Fjord while entering Oslo. I really wasn't that impressed. Please keep in mind, it was January, so everything was covered in snow. But it wasn't really "spectacular." There are many attractions around Oslo which can give you a great view of the Fjord, such as the view from Akershus Castle and Fortress. It is quite peaceful and the views are nice. It feels like going back in time to the old days of traveling by boat from port to port.
If you stroll around Oslo Harbour, every look seems to push you towards a ride through the Fjord. That’s the reason to go to Norway isn't it?
This is the best way to approach Oslo.Small cottages dotted on different islands, beautiful vista of the Holmenkollen and surrounding area.Nice approach into the harbour in front of the Town Hall.
