I like this church, the cathedral for the diocese of Agder & Telemark. Late 19th century neogothic offering wooden, lofty vaults. Very good musical activity.
It is quite a spectacular church that really stands out in the main town square opposite the fountain. Not too opulent but simple and very well maintained. They even have headsets for English translation of the service on this Sunday morning. I am not sure if they do so every Sunday.
church is open, with some people probably willing to talk to you.best part is close to tourist office with free wifi.not much reason to come here
Short visiting hours, I believe 11 to 2 p.m. only. Nice from the outside, but the beauty lies within. Plan accordingly.
The cathedral is a typical village church, nothing special like those of stavanger or trondheim. Getting inside can be a prob as well, since it's mostly closed
The church is worth visiting whilst walking around the well kept streets of the Old Town. The church has an amazing timber roof and a beautiful organ positioned before the altar.
Sits prominent in it own park on the edge of the main square. when we visited all the tulips were in flower and the cherry blossom trees that line the streets of the "Old Town" were in full bloom. Inside the cathedral we were surprised to find it is entirely made of timber with huge wooden columns supporting the wood line vaulted roof. all the galleries are again formed from timber with evidence of restoration taking place. while we where having a look round a local came wandering in took off his jacket and sat down at the keyboard of the pipe organ and began to play "Jerusalem", what a fantastic sound we sat and listen for 30mins or so. Look out for the small model of whaling ship suspended from the roof
The interior has an elegant simplicity and is mostly made of wood. When we visited the tulip beds were in full bloom. As Kristiansand is a rather small place, I would include this as a site to see when visiting.
Pretty little fishing village a short bus ride form Kristiansand. Pretty, clean little town; not a lot to do. There are a couple of restaurants, and one can walk through the village and admire the water front and pretty wooden houses. We found the Hollen citizens we encountered friendly. Bus fare relatively expensive 20/pp round trip from Kristiansand Center. Beware the $7.00 ice cream cone. But, it was a nice day and something to do in a nice laid back environment. Also a way to see a bit more of the area and people surrounding the port.
As part of our self-guided walking tour of Kristiansand during our Norway fjord cruise we walked past this lovely cathedral and took some photos. This church is located right in the heart of downtown and is a short walk from the cruise ship dock. Completed in 1885, this cathedral is one of the largest cathedrals in Norway. The surrounding area is quite lovely with a nice park nearby and shopping district just around the corner.
The church is impressive by itself - elegant in a somewhat understated way - inside and out. While I am a fan of stave churches, this was a great church to visit, even while workers hurried to complete renovations that included installation of a new main organ. What put this church over the top for us was the fact that my wife's grandmother was baptized here in 1899, and I was able to confirm that the font we viewed would have been the one in which she was baptized. The personal connection made this beautiful place even more special. They ask for donations and we were glad to give something. We gave a little more in consideration of the fact that they had a very nice hardcover pictorial church history that was free!
Kristiansand was our first port of call on a recent Baltic cruise, we liked the laid back atmosphere of the small city of Kristiansand, we went round the city on a land train and spotted the Domkirke. We were told it had 13 doors but we couldn't find one that was open!!! Still, we took lots of photos of the exterior which was very worthwhile.
From outside, this Domkirke looks similar to other churches. But if you step inside, you will find it's quite different; as you will see it all wooden. It was my first time to see a church with wood wall inside, usually churches are made by brick or stones...so this Domkirke gave me quite an impression. Beautiful brown woods make a space really relaxing and charming at the same time. If you are seeing for a short rest during your sightseeing or shopping, or simply want to have a sacred time, this is it. plus, it's free entry, just pop in to see the beautiful interior.
This is a lovely stone church in Southern Norway. The interior is worth a visit....Fantastic woodwork. If you can catch a service it is even better.
Kristiansand is not the most interesting of cities, but the cathedral is the highlight. Large, imposing and central. It is inevitably rather plain, as are most buildings in Scandinavia, but sufficiently interesting to justify a visit. It was pouring with rain when we visited, but still worth it.
