It may sound tacky, but the Sognefjord is really a place of dreams. Here you will find gigantic limestone mountains surrounded by clouds and still blue waters and, if this wasn't enough, you'll still get beautiful rocky shores crowned by traditional red, blue and yellow little norwegian houses. The boat tour is amazing, but the real jewel of this tour is a train ride from Flam to Myrdal.Don't underestimate the weather though, you will get cold even in the summer!
This was A Total Relished Surprise ! Maneuvering through the waterways of this fjord was breathtaking and a sight to behold. The magnificence of this natural Beauty is not to be missed if you are anywhere nearby.
I took a five and a half hour boat trip from Bergen to Flam to see Sognefjord. I took a book along because I thought there might be an opportunity to read for some of the time and never opened it. From leaving Bergen the scenery was absolutely spectacular and I never stopped watching it, ever changing, ever beautiful and dramatic. I will return to Bergen in a different season just to see all of this again. I had a whole different understanding of the idea that the land and water can have 'moods' after this trip.
This is one of the most beautiful travel experiences of my life. Even though Norway is considered by many tourists as a country to skip due to expensive stay and food, the trip from Oslo to Bergen with the fjordtours which is called Sognefjord in a nutshell is really amazing, relaxing and worth every signle penny you spend! Try to avoid September (it may not be sunny!) and go in July! It will be a little crowded but you'll definately gonna enjoy it! Every single minute from the train from Oslo to Myrdal, the old train from Myrdal to Flam and especially the nutshell (boat) from Flam to Bergen is spectacular!
You have to be lucky with the weather:rain is not a good company. Ferries are quite expensive, but it was worth that.
We did our own Norway In A Nutshell tour, by booking the Oslo-Bergen Train, the Myrdal-Flam Train, the Flam-Balestrand express boat, and then the Balestrand-Bergen express boat after two nights in Balestrand. This enabled us to do the Aurlandsfjord and the Sognefjord. The boat trip through the fjord was the high point of our whole trip. Astounding. You will take a lot of photos. Waterfalls, cliffs, etc - wow!!!There are a number of other options on how to tour the fjords, most of which are less work but may not offer some features. We did this because we wanted to spend some time in a small town on the fjord (Balestrand) where we knew no cruise ships would dock.
We took the car ferry run by Fjord1 up the narrowest part of the Sognefjorden. We walked on the boat at Kaupanger and went to Gudvagen, up Naeroyfjorden. We parked our car at the ferry dock, bought our ticket on the dock, and walked on with no problem. It was a beautiful day so we sat outside for the whole 5 hour trip. There is a short narration about a few points of interest. It was very hard to hear, though, due to others nearby speaking other languages all throughout the English translation. We were glad we had our binoculars as there were some small animals in the water. It turns out it was Lagenorhynchus albirostris, commonly known as a white beaked dolphin. We saw them when we came over so on the way back we were ready with binoculars. There were lots of big waterfalls and beautiful scenery. Food on board was even more expensive than Norway's normal expensive restaurant food. Bring your own drinks and sandwiches, grab a deck chair, and enjoy the ride!
We took the "Sognefjord In A Nutshell" tour that will take you from Bergen to Flåm via express boat through Sognefjorden, then to Myrdal via a vintage train, then back to Bergen via train. One can take the reverse route but we chose to start with the boat first to use the last leg of the tour as a time to rest since we have been through the railway before. It was a good choice since the highlight of the tour is the beautiful fjord. The first couple of hours on the boat was a bit lazy but there is still a lot of scenery to see. Once on the Sognefjord the scenery gets a lot a better with high hills and mountains on both sides, the waterfalls, and of course the serene waters of the fjord. One word says it all: beautiful.
Very long trip both ways... nearly 13 hours...The weather was perfect so the long journey didn't seem so bad.The scenary was great and lots of photo taking opportunities, including fish eagles, dolphins, glacier (from a distance), and the Fjords. It was disappointing that the return journey was the exact opposite of the outward journey. However, we just used the return journey to catch up on some sleep.Expensive, long and quite good with good weather. Would not recommend going in bad weather...
A beautiful fjord; hotel is on an arm of the fjord; we enjoyed kayaking and also driving around the fjord.
Sognefjoden is the longest fjord in Norway. It was a nice ferry ride. The seaguls were a treat to watch. They would wait around for titbits from people on the ride. It was pretty windy sitting on the deck. We decided to then go and sit in the sun to feel better. The food that they had served specially for us on the ferry was very good. Had a great time.
We have taken a ferry ride from Flam to Gudvangen thru Sognefjord, though it was over 2hrs but every moment of the ferry ride was worth it. On a sunny day water was dark blue and some places it was like mirror and reflection of mountain in water was just divine.
I love Western Norway. The fjords running up and down the west coast are some of my most favourite places on earth. The Sognefjord is one of these places. The boat left Bergen around 8am and proceeded north then east, eventually arriving at Flam. But not before we were able to see Norway's longest and deepest (I think) fjord in all it's sunny glory. This was a fantastic day, one that we shall not soon forget.
We had a great sea kayak adventure in a beautiful setting. We will be back. The service by Njord is real good!
