Took the cable car up to mount ulriken and hiked the vidden trail towards floyen. It was still quite icy on the mountain top and although we wore hiking boots, we kept slipping on the ice and snow. Some parts were easy but others were steep and dangerous. We did not meet any other tourists there at this time of the year. Almost all were locals and boy were they fit! It's a long journey so bring food and drinks. All along the journey there is a view and you forget about the fatigue when you look over to the vast mountains and the scenic fjords. Recommended for the fit! If not, trail may be abit challenging.
In fair weather, take the cable car up Mt. Ulriken, have a coffee and enjoy the view. Then, with good shoes and a bottle of water, follow the signs/path/crowd along the ridge for a 4 - 5 hour walk to Mt. Fløien with stupendous views of Bergen, the coast and mountains inland. The "Folgefonna" glacier is also visible in fair weather.Make sure to dress appropriately for the season and weather.
This hike requires good hiking shoes and bring food and water. Excellent for the ones who like mountain hiking. Superb view over the city and the fjords. But, dont underestimate - it will take you 4-5 h valking!
There are many alternatives for this hike, not only in regards to the routes but also seasons. You can either walk or ski. The most common hike is to take the cable car to the Mount Ulriken (or walk up), hike for about 2-3 hours and then again either take the funicular down to the city center or walk. Recommended!
This is a great walk, anytime really, but it is made that much nicer if the weather is on your side. As others have said, this is really a proper hike, not just a stroll in the hills. It will take around 5 hours to complete, in good weather, and there are parts where you will be doing some climbing/scrambling. I wouldn't recommend this walk if you're not too fit, you don't have to be an athlete but there's no point in getting about halfway only to find out that you've bitten off more than you can chew. Also, if you're struggling for most of the walk then you're not going to enjoy it. The walk is quite isolated and there is no easy way out if you're getting really tired. Also be aware that a lot of the walk is over the tops of the hills, not only does this mean a lot walking up and down but it also means that you're more vulnerable to the elements. The weather in Bergen can be very changeable and just because it is sunny when you start does not mean that it will stay that way, always take the appropriate clothing for walking in the hills. Proper walking boots will also help but try not to get boots with an overly stiff sole, as this can make climbing difficult. I would also recommend taking a detailed topographic map of the area and a compass and make sure that you can navigate using these. That may sound obvious but lots of people take these items but then have no idea how to use them properly and can easily get lost when the weather closes in. If you're doing this walk in the winter months, I did it in February, it is worth remembering that Bergen lies at a latitude of 60° north. Not only does that make the weather a little more extreme, even if there is no snow it can be very icy, but it also means that the amount of daylight can be quite short, less than 6 hours in midwinter, shorter still when the weather is bad. Make no mistake, you do not want to find yourself several miles from the end of the walk when it's getting dark. Do not start the walk unless you are sure you can complete it before darkness falls and remember, the walk will take longer in bad weather. A few people have stated that you're better of starting at Ulriken and walking to Fløyen. It's certainly true that taking the cable car up Ulriken saves the initial climb, however I talked to a few people who said that they had troubling finding the correct bus from the centre of Bergen and also they didn't know where to alight. If you walk from Fløyen to Ulriken then not only can you start the walk from the centre of Bergen but it is also easier to get the bus back, as it will have the word "Sentrum" wriiten on the front. If you do chose to go from Fløyen to Ulriken then it's worth noting the cable car at Ulriken stops running at 17:00, where as the funicular at Fløyen runs until 23:00. If you do want to start at Ulriken then buses 2 & 3 leave from the centre of Bergen, the nearest stop to the cable car is the hospital, if you're worried about missing the stop just ask the driver to stop at the hospital when you board, they're quite used to it!
Yes, you are inside the city, so it may sound surprising, but crossing "Vidden" is a real hike, and takes about 4 hours for even the fit walker. Be dresssed and prepared. Start by taking Ulriksbanen up and walk TO Mount Fløyen.
Beautiful site, great walk, not too easy but not immensely hard (we are adults). There are pools of water, great view of Bergen and sheep every now and then. We took the cable car going up and down.A few words of advice: the trail was published as being 3-5 hours long. although I am in ok shape, the trail took me and my brother 6 hours, and we walked fast (as we realized it was going too slowly). Also, in first half of the trail we were attacked by crazy winds, and if there is rain you will be very exposed.
We had amazing weather when we decided to do the hike. We did it in April and we encountered some snow patches which was exciting for us being from Africa. Distance from Ulriken to Mt Floyen is about 13km - took us about 3.5hrs (we are however quite keen cyclists and relatively fit). We stopped about half way to have some lunch while looking out at one of the amazing views. Breathtaking scenery the whole way. Quite a popular route but not crowded even on a wonderful day. We'd definitely do it again if we go back to Bergen. Not too challenging, some steep paths to go down but very doable. We didn't even wear hiking shoes but I am sure it will be even better with proper shoes. There were some running enthusiasts along the way. Packing refreshments is a must as there's no place to buy along the path.
great hike with a good view! but be prepared to a long trip - and bring food and water :) you can take the cable car up to Ulriken and hike from there or go from Fløyen to Ulriken :)
From downtown Bergen take bus no. 12 and get off at Montana. From there walk up to Mount Ulriken - a nice and easy walk, as the bus has taken you half-way up already. Above an elevation of about 400m trees do not grow andy more and that makes you fieel like 2000m higher in the Alps. From Ulriken follow the numerous markers in a wide horseshoe turn towards Floyen. No guide needed. Pass small lakes that hold drinking waters for Bergen, pass the old telecom tower and arrive at Floyen. Walk down and enjoy the views. No cable car is needed all day!Nice weather makes the walk much more enjoyable and good shoes help a lot!
We just did this as an almost spur of the moment. We went up Mt ulriken in the cable car, which was a lovely ride up and a good view over the city. We decided to do the walk to Mt Floren. We were told it would take between 4 and 5 hours. It took us almost 5 hours. We did see locals running and even riding their bikes along the track. In some parts of the track you have to use your arms to help you get up and down and it is rather steep. How a bike got up or down those is beyond me. On our hike the weather started out beautifully, but unfortunately was wet and rainy for about half. At some points with the mist it was difficult to find the track markers to ensure we were heading in the right direction. And with the rain it was more slippery. There was some wonderful views and scenery along the way so if you do this I give you this advice, which is to make sure the weather is good. Also wear appropriate footwear as the track is rocky and there are places where some climbing/scambling is needed.
Well worth taking the cable car up and enjoying the view which provides a good way of getting ones bearings in Bergen. We watched the shipping steam in and out of the port and enjoyed a drink on the restaurant terrace. There are lots of trails at the top but the best view, unsurprisingly, is from the viewing area at the top of the cable car.
Excellent hike that welcomes everyone. I have taken the hike a couple of times before this summer. I decided to take my kids with me this time (they are 4 and 7 years old). It took about seven hours. It usually takes less for adult. You might want to bring somethings to eat and drink, especially if its sunny.
Certainly worth a trip if your visiting Bergen. The queues can be quite long but it's worth the wait. Great views from the top as long as the clouds stay clear. There are lots of nature trails to explore and there is a souvenir shop and restaurant at the summit.
For this trip you need to remember water and food. If you are not used to walking a lot, be prepared, the walk can take some time. But once you are at the top of ulriken its a pretty straight forward walk. I walked when the weather was tiptop and then you get a really great view at both ulriken and floyen.
