Czechs love Americans and love Patton for the American role in liberating the Czech Republic (until FDR gave away eastern Europe). If you liked Patton or the movie, go here.
This museum is small but well maintained and gives a good history of the US Army and its connection with Pilzen. I enjoyed my time there and learned a few things in the meantime. You can probably see the whole display in 45-60 minutes but I would definitely say add this to your trip to Pilzen.
Recommend reading the panels and see how the fanaticism made it nearly impossible for any Germans to express their consciences for fear of execution and locals could not resist without fear of execution. Read the panel that shows US killed and wounded on the route to freeing Plzen, that was incredible sacrifice worth remembering. USSR's occupation and subsequent media and education manipulation worth awareness. Too bad USA scuttled Patton who saw one fascist defeated to be replaced by another who was even worse.
Patton is the American general who had most sucsess in the Allied liberation of occupied territory during WWII. The museum in his name is though 90 per cent local war history and 10 per cent Patton slash overall war history. Still it is quite fascinating. The compact exhibition contains numerous artifacts, mainly American trooper equipment. Lot's of images from the liberation of Plzen, and also a cold war section about the incredible fairytales communists made about the liberators after the war.
A lot to see all in Czech. Nice displays from ww2. Staff nice. Movies good no sound! Hard to find parking.
This is a neat spot full of us history. I really enjoyed looking through this museum. It has a lot of history in it even though it is very small. It's worth a look.
I'm a WWII fan and I especially George Patton. We just returned from Pilsen and made it point to take in this museum. The museum is small and has only three exhibits that were specially about Patton.1. A bust of Patton.2. A picture of Patton3. A display of his 4 start helmet and ribbons. The rest of the museum displayed uniforms and other items for WWII. If you've been to any other museums dictated to WWII, don't make any effort to see this one.
This small museum is worthwhile visiting if you are interested in the history of the Czech Republic at the end of WWII. The communists denied the liberation of Plzen by the Americans. A "fine" example how history was rewritten by them. This exhibition does justice to the role the US Army played in the liberation.
As soon as I started reading first information panel, I could not stopped. I red every text the museum had to offer and was really glad I did. The stories of different cities and people were really fascinating and moving, I even had a hard time holding tears few times. The museum is really small in comparison to others, but I think it is even its advantage, because you have time to absord it all.
My family really enjoyed visiting the museum. The worker was super friendly to us and answered many questions. My boys enjoyed looking at all the pictures and everything in the cases. It was a nice tribute and educational.
As a guide I brought to the museum students from USA to show them what happened here at the end of WW2. So many young souldiers sacrificed their lives. We shall keep it in ouir mind and hand over this event. to future generation. At school during communism the history was interpreted in a different way in spite of the fact that there were living witnesses. I would like to thank all of the people who helped to open and run this museum. I will bring more tourists there. It shows real and personal srotries. Thank you.
I visited this museum during the tour of Pilsen. It is quite an small military museum, but with a very nice collection, especially considered the fact that most of the exhibits come from private collections. Furthermore, it sheds a new light on historical events that happened in Pilsen during world war 2, especially because its considered that Soviet soldiers liberated whole of Czech republic. You wont spend much time there, but it is definitely worth a visit!Entrance fee is about 2 euros.
My husband and I had been looking for a place to donate some of my Dad's WWII souvenirs given to him by the people of Czechoslovakia late in the war. We found out about the Patton Museum and are delighted with the reception we received from the curators. Milan accepted our donations with respect and admiration for the roll our Dad played in liberating his country almost 70 years ago. We will return to Plzen and look forward to returning to the Patton Memorial Museum.
I've been to Plzen three times. It's a short trip from Grafenwoehr, Germany, so it's an easy destination to take visiting guests. We always go to the Patton Museum. True, the entrance isn't very dramatic, and you'll probably pass it a few times before you find it. I love the the old uniforms, books, magazines, and military supplies on display. But like others have said, the real gold is in the photos and film reels. It is a very small museum, but you can easily spend an hour or two if you read through all of the displays. It is always very interesting, and well worth the two hour drive. It is close to the downtown area, and an easy walk. Plzen is my favorite city for a weekend getaway, and the Patton Museum is part of the reason why.
Very old fashioned type of museum but an interesting little excursion and well worth the time. If you like history in general and WW2 history in particular this is definitely worth a visit.
