The castle is located near a village Strecno not far from Zilina. Two kind of a public transport are from Zilina to Strecno (train or bus). The way to castle has many stairs! The panoramatic views from castle is wonderful (river, village).
youi van meet the knights times on strecno castle. very nice renovated casle. just a step down you can use a wooden rafts, special slovak way of wood transport couple of dozen years ago.
Definitely a must-see, the view are simply magnificent and the tour is very informative taking you through the history of the region and the castle step-by-step.
Beautiful ruins of a gothic castle overlooking Strenco Village. Great tour guide who spoke for us in English. Had a lovely surprise at the end of tour, when a gentleman played Mozart for us in the restored chapel. It sounded fantastic! 71 steps to the top of the tower affords a 360 degree gorgeous view of the village, mountains, and valleys. Stunning and historically very interesting.
castle is located near Strečno village on the important cliff above Váh river level. Castle belongs to sentinel guards on river Váh. On the opposite side of that river is located Starhrad castle, but just now are there ruins only.
Experiences are incredible! The river is nice, nature, waves, guides in national costumes. And climbing the castle!
Superb partially-restored Gothic castle, just steeped in history. the (tiny) 3 Euro entrance fee includes a 40-minute guided tour which is fabulous, and if you don't speak Slovakian ask for one of the many laminated guide sheets in other languages which are loaned for free. Because of the narrowness of the inside of the building there is no free roaming about for visitors, it just would not work on safety and congestion levels, a guide opens the door at set times and if your ticket has that time printed on it, in you go. Fascinating museum displays with some very impressive set-pieces and two amazing models, one of how the castle looked like at its peak, and one of how it looked like about 30 years ago when restoration work began. Plenty to do outside the main tower while waiting, there some of the outside of the castle to look at, and some astonishing mountain and valley views over the river far below. Car park is at the bottom of the hill (there is a small charge for this) with a snack bar and souvenir shop. I did this as a day trip from Zilina, on a weekend, and public transport is sporadic then, so check ahead. Completely unsuitable for anyone with mobility problems, it is a steep walk uphill to the castle, impossible to push a wheelchair up it, and very hard with sticks, and once you are there, well, it's a castle- uneven ground, stone steps, spiral staircases, narrow doorways etc. Not terribly exciting for younger children, i would guess, and buggy access is hard (see comment for wheelchairs). I am a professional historian and a definite castle and museum-freak, and this one had me smiling the whole time, a super place to spend an afternoon!
Well worth a visit, nice friendly guide who speaks a few languages, very interesting hour or two, good photo ops from the top, surrounding countryside is lovely. ps really friendly[and cheap] bar back down near the main road .ask for Stefan.
Loved the castle..... That being said, everything else was terrible. It seems, this place is privately owned (I may be wrong in this), and when I and my two sons came, after purchasing the tickets and asking an employee if we can take photographs, another employee, ( the 'guide') accused us of trying to fraudulently do this (apparently there is an additional fee for the 'privilege' of taking photos, which we didn't know), when I tried to correct this by offering to pay the difference, this woman just insisted (screamed), that we were there totally illegally without any tickets at all....??? Quite an embarrassing behavior on her part.... Get a grip lady....! Couldn't even finish the tour, didn't get our tickets refunded in addition to the unfortunate scene... Worst part of our visit of Slovakia...But maybe she got fired since..?
stop and go there, nice castle, good sight on Vah river, good place to stop when on long journey, possibilities to eat something
My favourite castle, near in Žilina /cca seven kilometers from Žilina/.
From the castle (even without getting into the castle) you get this great view on the river. Nice and easy walk for family with young children (mine were 3 and 4 years old).
If we had not known there was a castle in Strecno, we would have very well driven by. But although difficult to see until you are pretty much at the front door, it is well worth an hour to take in a guided tour. Free parking is right along the highway with maybe a 15 minute walk up the hill to the castle. You must take a guided tour to see the inside and it was well worth it. We were the only two and our guide, though normally not the case, gave the tour in English and she did a super job. This was a delightful experience.
