A lovely cathedral, that is still used on a regular basis for regular church activities, baptisms, weddings, services. Cover your head, don't show skin, and no shorts, and you can go in and blend in with the congregation . There may be singing, maybe not, one thing you won't find are pews or any place to sit down--usual in Orthodox places of worship, but they do also have a custom, where people come in after things have begun and leave before they are finished, so you won't be standing 2 hours praying, "please please let this end".Frescos etc inside are very beautiful and the atmosphere surrounding the cathedral is peaceful

Close to tourists until midday, it worths the visit not just the history or the pics, the atmosphere is great too. Interesting the reliqs and the story associated.

This is one of the pivotal Kartyli/Georgian Cathedrals and you must see it if you want to learn more of what makes Sakartvelo/Georgia a nation.

As part of the Georgian heritage- the Sioni cathedral is also quite interesting inside and worth the visit, while in town.

Sioni Cathedral of the Dormition is one of the most important Georgian Orthodox Cathedrals. It was a typical example of medieval Georgian Church architecture. The construction was initIated in the Vth century. The facade are simple, but inside in 1850/60 it was completely covered by an interesting series of murals (K.G. Gagarin), though the older frescoes were lost in the process. Sioni is interessant, beautiful and a peaceful place.

Once the most important church in Tbilisi, this gem is hidden between the riverside and the tiny streets of the Old Town. Be sure to walk in if you want and offer a prayer. Very different from Russian Orthodox churches due to lack of over-the-top decoration. Modest and truly Christian

Many reconstructions. Main reason to visit if to see the St Nono Cross from the 4th Century. This is perhaps the most important relic in the Georgian Orthodox church.

Just walk around and you will find this gem in the middle. Great frescoes and lovely religious atmosphere. The entrance is simple but so pretty. Do not forget to check the balcony of "Romeo & Juliet" just outside.

It is always a battle when funds are scarce but this Church is well worth helping. The frescoes are proof of this.

Very well maintained inside; when we went we were the only ones there; kind of feels forgotten but it's very pretty.

Sioni is between Erekle and Shardeni streets, which are currently the most popular streets for tourists and gourmands. It was the main cathedral till 2005. The best season for taking picture around Cathedral is Summer. This place has no additional attractions for tourists and it's not devoted to Tourism.Construction of Sioni started in 5th century. It was reconstructed many times, since Orthodox Georgia was frequently attacked by Turks, Arabs, Mongols.
