Rather than write about the Abbaye I want to recommend the tiny town/village with its delightful river and quiet, calm setting. My wife and I were having a week's holiday in Creuse, Limousin. We delight in exploring tiny, narrow country roads and stumbling on delightful spaces to stop, walk and exercise our dog. For us, the quieter the better and the more remote the better. We stumbled upon this delightful little place and so enjoyed it's tranquilty we returned a second time. Below the village is a majestic Roman bridge spanning the river. Across the bridge is a small car park giving access to the river bank and across the road a childrens play area with, beside it, an almost unused road which tempts you to follow the river upstream. Shortly you will find the road leaves the river but a wide track continues past a weir and then on for ever, or so it seems. Fish languidly break the water's surface. Horses graze in a field, buzzards soar and shriek overhead. Wonderful. Not a soul around, no tourist tat and not a sound beyond the natural ambience of river and animals.
Whilst on a tour of this region we were recommended to visit this small abbey.Although there is a small charge we were not disappointed at the unbelievable, beautiful wood carvings that filled this abbey. How anyone managed to do such fascinating carving is now lost -this was an age of real craftsmanship. Some tourists jus visited the outside but a while spent seeing the interior is a must.
