The Vosges are much easier to access than the Alps if you are coming, as we are, from Belgium. 430 km and 4.5 hours driving time from Brussels. Lodging (and everything else?) is cheaper too. In fact we found food reasonably priced compared to home. Gerardmer the town is a 6 minute drive to the slopes (La Mauselaine). You can find apartments walking distance to the slopes, or you can drive or take free shuttle from town every morning. Easy and good ski rentals at slopes. Flexible ski lift prices. The 2 caveats here:- limited skiing. This is fine for a family with young kids (lessons are available at the Ecole du Ski Français) and medium skiing skills and expectations. High season brings some waiting at lifts, and many people on blue and green slopes (but red and black are never crowded). It is to be noted however that new lifts will be installed this summer, and new slopes too. Overall it is more than enough to keep the family busy for a week. But expect to do the same slopes many times. - altitude is about 1000 m, meaning that you may not have snow all the time. February is usually a safe bet, though. They have snow machines on several slopes, so low temperatures are enough to ensure that you can ski even if there is no natural snowfall. But if temps rise, you may lack snow more often than in the Alps.Overall, if you are in a cold season, and looking for an easier drive than the Alps, at significantly lower prices, and are happy with a medium size resort, consider Gerardmer.
Late summer is the nice and quiet time. Lots of hiking to do, mostly recomemnded is a tour of the lake. Put on good boots as it might be slippery at spots... The whole tour takes about 2 hours and you get to walk at ice places.
Gerardmer with its lake and mountains is a good base for visiting the Vosges in the summer. Lots to do.
Boring place with a lot of old people. Would visit only with good weather..... Laken is nice tough, but have seen better ones...
Been in with my family and really enjoyed. It's a beautiful lake and the weather was beautiful too.My Kids just love it special the carousel a few meters from the lake.
I love the lake in any season. It's always changing depending on the sky and the surrounding mountain colors. Of course summer is great to take boat. But winter with snow around and sometimes the lake frozen too is something to be seen....
Returning to Geradmer this august, I really enjoyed the city and its lake. You can walk around the lake, there is now a nice track all around, plunge into the fresh water, and then take a stroll in the small city, enjoy the small park and the promenade, have a drink at the numerous terasses on the main place, shop in the nice boutiques and tourist shops. If you're not a city folk, it doesn't take long to go outside the city and go into the green high up in the direction of the ski resort La Mauselaine, which domain has been extended over a few valleys, so it's never boring (and by the way quite cheap if you compare to the Alps) and offers a magnificent view over the lake. There is so much to do in the summer and the winter, simply go to the tourist information at the former railway station and they can help you find a nice programm for every taste!I know this city since I was baby, and it never disapoints! the best season to discover Gerardmer is the summer from june till september and the ski season, from december to march. There is no snow garanty but always something to do (iceskating, swimming, bowling, shopping), and in case there is not enough snow for alpine/downhill ski, you might want to try nordic skiing, another very nice way to discover the beautifull landscapes! Enjoy!
Forfaits abordables, activites a cote (patinoire, piscine, marche,...).
Proximo a Ribeauville, onde me hospedei. apenas 2 horas de viagem
