This is a must visit , it doesn't look real, it's like a fairytale castle...but it's real , you are taken on a guided tour firstly in French then in English ...very interesting and one of the most photogenic places I haveever visited

really old castle, well restored in the 70's which gives a true feel of how the aristocracy lived, played and fought over many centuries. No unguided entrance of tours and difficult to comprehend the French-speaking guides' listing of countless dates going back to the middle ages - but the eccentric collection and displays allowed for a good sense of the containment and control in a moated fortified dwelling. Felt I would like to see a bit more of how the current descendants lived including their non fortified massive outside sun lounge!

A very pleasant small castle, aptly presented as a transition between pre-gun stone castles and after-gun fortresses. The exhibit hall makes much of the role of the original owning family in managing and preserving the property - a subject about which I expect I would be quite boastful too, if I were in their shoes, so I welcome the point as fair. Well designed guided tours manage to keep quite large groups entertained at a reasonable pace, and controlled in quite narrow passages, while keeping fancy stories low. Much appreciated. You do get to enjoy this even as an adult free from catering for children. The park is also very nice, with a few ancient, imposing items. We saw nothing of the rose garden because of rainy weather, check out other reviews for it.

This chateau is still privately owned! The architecture is unique. There are timed internal guided tours in different languages. There is a big park and a restaurant for snacks and drinks.

Had a chance to see this chateau on my last vacation. From the outside everything looked amazing and I was able to get GREAT pictures, but there is NO PHOTOGRAPHY in the facility. I was not aware of this until I got yelled at by another lady who was not my tour guide. This chateau is by guided tour ONLY. Our guide was pretty good. She was able to describe every section in French then in English.

This romantic-looking Chateau from the Middle Ages is fascinating - a real mix of fairy-tale castle and fancy French chateau. Friendly welcome at the entrance, interesting place to look round but you have to take a guided tour to look inside, which lasts an hour and we felt we would have rather looked around on our own. The grounds are free to roam though.

The lady tour guide was very knowledgeable gave her talk in English as well as in French, which we really appreciated. Lots to see inside the Chateau, a good value visit.

If you like a good castle this one is for you. Startlingly designed in brick with four towers And surrounded by wonderful trees including a sequoia from 1787 Rambures is well worth a visit. Only not excellent because if it were what would you say about Queribus or Peyrepertuse!

We are very sorry that you could not enjoy your visit at Rambures as much as all the other English-spoken tourists usually do.We thank you for your message that enables us to improve all the time.But we are a little bit surprised as well since our guides are trained to give explanation in English. Indeed one of our recent English visitors has stated here : “The lady tour guide was very knowledgeable, gave her talk in English as well as in French”. Whenever you mention you do not speak French at the beginning of the tour, the guide translates the information. Further more, a document is available in English and gives you all the clues about this very old monument.So we do hope you will be able to come back one day at Rambures Castle and enjoy an English-spoken visit.We are always very happy to welcome visitors from all around the world, Belgians, Germans, English, Italians, Americans..., and to share with them six centuries of our Family and French History.

Visited on the opening day of the 2014 season. The English speaking guide was outstanding - trying to find the correct words to describe what was being displayed. The building itself was fascinating as was the more than well-described history and the families involved.The on-site cafe was closed, but people on-site made us a fresh cup of proper French coffee - what a wonderful thing to do - THANK YOU. How many places would that happen at?Great woodland walks - red squirrels, hares as well as birdlife.We enjoyed a magical few hours here and will return at some point in the future!

This is not a day out; it is not even a morning out; but it's a very, very good few hours.Easy to find from traffic free roads, you just know that medieval maidens let their hair flow fromthe windows of the beautiful, petite, fortified chateau for handsome princes to ascend. No doubt they were later wedded in the tiny chapel that is almost embedded in the shrubbery.The gardens are utterly informal - mainly grass, trees and shrubs - but as quiet and peaceful as if you were in your own cherished plot or that of an intimate friend. That said there is an arboretum that I gave a miss because such haunts horde insects with stings as virulent asany knight's jousting lance and to which I am prone, but recommended for those less so. Concealed elsewhere is a charming pavilion converted to a coffee house that blends the incongruous - yet strangely appealing - aroma of the fresh beans with the natural environment. But perhaps the highlight of the visit is the rose garden. Words can't expand on its beauty and interest. Superb.I also gave the chateau itself a miss, but you can have a guided tour. I don't like guided trips per se, a wanderer being! However, this one is so small that obviously parties need careful navigation else chaos develops and I support the approach. Also the provenance is fascinating so if you are into ancient French kings, it's a must.There's nothing to buy here. No jam; no Rambures herb jelly, no pictorial plates. It's the betterfor that. If you're lucky you may get a postcard from the entrance kiosk, but take the rightmoney because they're not so switched on as to have change. It adds to the charm. Great. Go.

Driving to the Chateau you find it appearing next to you without warning on the side of the road, would be very easy to drive past without even noticing. What a shame that would be the -building and surroundings are incredibly beautiful.We knew in advance (thanks to TA) that there was only a guided tour available and that was limited to certain rooms and only in French. If we'd not been prepared I think we would have been very dissapointed. Worth while checking on the website when they are open, we visited early March on a Sunday and it was only open at 2pm.I think the tour took about an hour, covered about 1/3 of the building. The guide was helpful and gave us an English written version of what he was describing, this was both interesting and amusing. He regularly asked if we had any questions which was nice (considering we understand very little French).The remainder of the building is clearly occupied, and it is understandable that there is only guided tours available having followed the route round. However we'd have happily done that in about 20 minutes. Worth a visit, not sure if you can just wander round the grounds for free, that would most likely be a better option.

we visited in may this year was a lovely warm sunny day and the chateau was great really well worth a visit

Visited this lovely chateau on holiday in Picardy in August. Very picturesque and romantic. The guided tour was excellent with a good translation in English and the guide also translated into English. Good range of rooms to see - very interesting history. Grounds and rose garden are pretty. Well worth a visit - very reasonable.

Hello, thank your for your advise , i just would like to give some details about dust, the guide, the paintings ...1) in fact you can find some dust, it's true ..because we have always important work in the castle in some rooms, for restorations , for example.2) the guide has a regular voice,he has the rythm which is needed for 2 languages (yes commentaries are in english with some precisions + the written guide) , for 10 rooms , not 5 as you said it . The number of rooms and the time for the tour are the same for everybody.3) paintings are not in a terrible state for many, but a great campaign of restoration was organized 10 years ago, its very expensive and we are not Versailles or Windsor . We are just an authentic family castle and its what 99,9% of people who came appreciated .
