Bonus!
We took the train up from Paris to see this wonderful building, having been advised that they were cleaning it. Well yes, they are, but not as well as one would have hoped. The last time I saw it , over 30 years ago, it was traffic blackened, and very dark inside as well. What the cleaning has done externally has really improved the appearance and the sculptures can now be seen and admired for all the thought and skill that put them there. A wonderful improvement.Inside, it is totally different. The wonderful Stained Glass, for which the Cathedral is famous is truly magnificent and really something to sit and wonder at. So much colour and such fine detail. But the stonework left us really uncertain, having watched the cctv of the operatives doing the work on the scaffold above us. It looks to be very carefully skimmed with a plaster type substance, then painted a freestone colour with the mortar joints picked out in a darker colour. Some of the columns are painted, what looks to be an imitation Marble effect and quite garish in places,As far as we could understand from our very poor translation of French into English, it is taking the appearance back to earlier times, but we felt that it looks and feels false and did not do anything to improve the appearance when we saw it all those years ago, although it is now light and airy.We need to google it to see what is really happening, and get a better understanding of the cleaning/painting process, for we know that the trouble and care that the French give to their great public buildings and monuments would do nothing to harm their authenticity, but I was, never the less, quite disappointed
My brother and I rented a car for the day and wanted to go some place different outside Paris. We picked up the car in Versailles (to avoid crazy Parisian drivers) and drove to Chartres without really knowing what to expect. It was an easy, short drive mostly on the motorway (there are tolls-cheaper leaving Paris than returning). The medieval cathedral was incredible (and free!). The stained glass is beyond description, the colors glorious! The choir carvings have to be seen. It is a massive structure. The cathedral sits on a hill in the middle of the medieval city and there is parking very close by. The streets around the cathedral are also very old with quaint shops (that close for lunch) and antiquated houses. Be sure to walk around the cathedral to see the different facades and sit in the garden behind it overlooking the city to catch your breath.
I learned some time ago that if you want to view a Cathedral - Start at the back. It is there that you can see the bulk of the work, the structure, and what is holding it up. I stood for a long time looking at the 2 different front towers. The right one looked singularly plain and the left - a bit too ornate. I wondered why, 'so different?' Most cathedrals concentrate on symmetry - not so here. The exterior I noticed has most of the statues and attractions within view of the church goers. Relatively, on the exterior there are few adornments 'on high'; but below there are thousands. It makes you wonder if the stone cutters were paid 'by the statue,' for I think you would be lucky if you could 'squeeze' on another one. However, inside the huge vertical pillars and the stain glass are immediately noticeable. As we all know the coloured glass was to the instruct the 'Faithful,' but most 'pictures' really are difficult to make out. Personally I like the modern colored glass which goes more for the effect - that too would also help enlighten the interior.Okay, Florence, Milan of Chartres? Yes they are magnificent - aren't they! Brian from Perth W. Australia.
Yes, the stained glass and the carvings, sculpture, and reliefs are breathtaking, but if you go on a Friday between spring and late fall, you can walk the labyrinth, which is your lifetime journey in a nutshell. Check the website for the window of opportunity.
Beyond my expectations....if you want to walk the labrynith know its not always possible...the chairs are usually removed on Fridays.
built 1194 - 1220 , this is a very impressive buildingthe stained glass were disassembled during the ww2 and kept out of the reach of bombs, and are the most beautiful of the worldthe blue of the glass is uniquei d say the cathedral of chartres is one of the 7 - 8 more beautiful buildings to see in France, on your way between paris and the chateaux de la loire
