The shops are great, the supermarket (Carrefour) great and the bistro we ate in opposite Carrefour was great value.
Had a great day trip here on 7 March. Lovely shops, great variety and brilliant food court. Have visited a few times and am never disappointed. Love Carrefour!! Highly recommended.
Plenty of choica and free parking in this centre, with a good choice of restaurants. Large Carrefour along with many designer outlets.
went febuary half term closed on sundays, been a few times before the carrafour super market is great.
I visit Carrefour regularly: there are real bargains in wine to be had, plus coffee and pate are good value compared to here. The fish counter is a wonder to look at, and I've had some top quality Monkfish from there over the years. But I do miss the Tesco wine shop, as it was truly international, but it's a fact that the place (Cite Europe) is practically deserted these days. I'm sure it was designed to lure the Brits, and at FF10,00 = £1 it did, but when the rate dropped to 7, that all stopped, and even though the euro is now 73p, people are not coming back. Of course, that's good for me: no long queues at checkouts, but it must be boring for the staff working there.
Aside from the Hypermarket, the Cité Europe shopping mall in Calais show-cases mostly the same mix and offerings as you will find at home There is very ample free parking and it is a very short drive from the tunnel; a little longer from the ferry terminal. The mall is really driven by the Carrefour Hypermarket. This is very large and in addition to an exhaustive range of food and drink of every conceivable kind they sell just about anything one can need for home or leisure. Their seasonal promotions, particularly of Christmas fare are outstanding. For visitors from GB the bargains are in wines and beers (most other items costing similar to UK). Five and ten litre boxed wines can be particularly good value. Beers, including UK brands can be very reasonable. There is as one might expect, a very wide selection of wines of every type, quality and price – domestic and foreign. Be warned that the check-outs are not as efficient or as generously staffed as you may be used to and are apt to stall while the till jockey picks up a phone to debate in depth some lacking barcode or deals with some Brits with a prodigious drinks cart and a dodgy credit card. Also, remember to have fruit and veg weighed and priced in the department – they can’t do it at the till. Allow plenty of time for check-out if you have a ferry to catch! On the lower level, there is a food court. It is comprised of restaurants and cafes of varying degrees of pretention and price, mainly aimed at tourists. Avoid these and go upstairs to the Flunch restaurant. This is where the locals go to enjoy tasty and affordable lunches. The array of excellent starters, main courses and desserts leaves one spoilt for choice. Most dishes are prepared while you wait and the hot vegetable selection is unlimited self-service. These are presented in small volume and replenished every few minutes so they are always at their best. There is also a large ice-cream menu. It can be a very busy place at the lunch-time peak. It’s mass catering certainly, but of excellent quality and value: you can’t duff-up the French when it comes to food.
WE i must say only go over 2 buy the wine at the carrrefour supermarket It reminds me a lot of bluewater it has a few sports shops perfume shops all seems over priced would not go out of the way just to shop ??
Having toured around france with no problems just before leaving to return to the UK we stopped in Calais for a couple of days, only to find we could not go in Citte Europe with our two yorkie dogs, for this reason they missed out on our buisness I would imagine they lose a lot of trade due to no dogs allowed.
This was great for us a pre-tunnel trip home. We had a very good breakfast and there are many shops. We were warned though, not to leave our dog in the car as it is not allowed-even under cover.
been here 3 times and sometimes only reason i go over to france the restaurants there are very nice aswell.
If you have never been to a shopping centre...this is one. Some interesting points include.... 1) It has all the vibe, bustle and charisma of Disneyland, when its closed. 2) Unless you are looking for eyewear, or ladies garments, there's really very little else on offer, and nothing different to any other shopping centre in the world.3) You are not allowed to buy cigarettes anywhere near the shopping centre...I don't understand this!
I found a lot of the stuff I bought over there the same price or cheaper back home in England so if you are going to just get some stuff cheaper, I doubt you will find it, the French seem to have cottoned on to the fact that we go there for that reason and put their prices up
We always enjoy our visits to this location. There was plenty of room to park and no sign of any potential illegal immigrants around the area. It seemed much quieter than usual for the time of year and there were no special attractions for children as in previous years. A nice place to wander and shop, before catching a ferry. We tend to avoid the Carrefour and head for the nearby Auchan instead.
I haven't been to Cite Europe for a few years now and managed to get a free Eurotunnel trip via the clubcard deals. We were delayed going out, but we still had time to do what we needed to do.It was a struggle to find a parking space so we went across to the Channel Outlet shopping centre first (not as good as before and not alot there now in my opinion) then came back for late afternoon where we managed to get a space. The cost of diesel was around 20p a litre cheaper than at home, however the main reason for the visit was for the Carrefour, Like most people, you always spend more than you anticipate, but the choice is unbelievable. I don't think on the whole prices were much cheaper than at home. I guess it depends what you want though. The mall was very busy at expected for this time of year, but there was a good atmosphere. We checked out the food court before we went home, but were not that impressed with both availability of food that we wanted or price. If we come back, and had a bit more time, I would perhaps instead check out a new LIDL which is next door, or go over to Auchan as it may not be so manic.Good day trip however, and there's something for everyone
We have just come back from a weekend trip to Cite Europe where we go just to visit the huge Carrefour. We weren't disappointed, this year they had loads of lovely festive food for sale and some fabulous pre packaged gifts for that person who has everything. The value is great and although we also stop at the wine warehouse in Calais we use Carrefour to pick up spirits and other bits and pieces as it is so cheap. Parking is easy and plentiful and there are good eating and bathroom facilities.
