In the square, of the port of Marseilles, you catch a boat, it's not a huge boat ,it's almost like a speed boat, its 20 minute ride from the port to the island made notorious from the film The Count of Monte Cristo and the movie The Man in the Iron Mask. It is an island off the coast of Marseilles which you can see which held prisoner's, a lot of Protestant prisoners where held there as well as criminals. you get to experience seeing all the cells, you can take a walk with headphones which tells of the story or you can just explore on your own. magnificent, it looks like a castle, it has a small restaurant, great great little souvenir shop. You could actually do the castle, the Chateau if Prison in an hour. The boats come and go on the hour and it's very inexpensive. On the way back you can see the beautiful coastline and going you can see the beautiful coastline in the city and then you enter the port into the city of Marseille.... it's wonderful, very inexpensive and a fun time.
It is an interesting coastline with some natural harbors, but nothing extraordinary. For locals there would be some exciting destinations to explore.
Great boat trip.....gorgeous scenery ....... First trip to France and did not realize this area in the south was sooooo beautiful and rugged!,,,
This place was only 40 min walk from my grad school and as a girl who loves the outdoors, me and my friends spent many weekends afternoons out there. even though it is one of the most beautiful places in souther France, the place we never too crowded. so many great views and places to swim! Definitely my favorite place from my 1 year stay in the second biggest city in France!
Not so beautiful as Sugiton but pretty too! Small and cozy bay. Pines, water, stones, boats! There are some restaraunts also. Possible to get by the car.
The boat tour out of Marseille touring the various calanques in the area is beautiful and can go anywhere from 2 - 4 hours. If you've a free half day take this tour, there are several tour operators in the port, so you have choices. Best to go when the water is rather calm. A great adventure to be had by all ages.v
Now be prepared you have to walk to this place with your legs, and it is maybe a 4 Km walk and it is mostly downhill after a little up hill, and it is steep but you know that means that on the way home it is mostly up hill and it is steep.Take the number 44 bus from the Prado metro stop and ride it right to the ned of the Les Baumettes line, then walk.Callanque de Morgiou is not so much a village as a collection of buildings and a restaurant/cafe bar around a natural tiny harbour, but it is magnificent.Pack lots and I mean lots of fluid, if like the day I was there it is 32C then you will need it.For the adventurous take the right hand path around the bay, not for the unsure footed and take a dip off one of the rock bays, then climb up a long way and make your way to the end of the point where out will find the castle walls. Note there is no way down to beach at this point so it is just a circle to see the view so do it early before the sun gets too hot.For the faint hearted thee is a little beach to the right, some 200 m from the restaurant, which is nice but small and on a weekend gets too busy.
Take the boat to Pointe Rouge and then the bus No 19 and no 20 to Les Goudes or farther on. Then you have a spectacular view on the sea and the calanque. But take care that your shoes are good for walking over stones and hills.
The calanques can be best seen from a boat and we did the 'Essentiel' tour of 2h15m via the croisieres-marseille-calanques.com people. There is also a longer tour of 3h15m and the tickets and tour can both be found on the right hand side of the old port as you look out to sea.
We visited the two calanques that our guide book told us were accessible by car during a drive from Marseille to Cassis. The drive down to Morgiou is unexceptional, since the road itself offers no views to the coast. Upon arrival, you can drive right into the little village and park very close to the sea, but there is only a small town and a little and not particularly pretty fishing port there. The scenery from there is nothing to write home about! We did see some hikers climbing down a rather treacherous looking, steep trail from the clifftops. This might be a good starting place for some spectacular hikes along the coast, but if it's a quick visit for a picnic/stroll/photo opportunity you're after, this isn't the best spot. We also went to Sormiou (see the reviews on the entry for that!) which was much, much better if you are not planning a long hike as the views you can from the road and easily accessible walk are much better!
Marseille was our first destination of Euro-trip on first week on June. Amazing views of Sunset, what can be better. I believe that is one of most amazing places in Europe. There is no need extra comments. Simply Perfect.
Do not miss the Calanques, any of them. This one is of an easier access: you can reach it by car. During weekends, hotter days and vacations/ holidays all traffic is forbidden. TIP: go on a weekday and reach it by car. In the GPS set it to "route de calanques" and follow the directions. Is you decide to walk, pack light and be prepared for a long and high way up and down (we hiked and it WORTH the effort, but...)
Among the best views I have every seen. This place was a blast. The hiking to get there was a lot of fun. Swimming in the Mediterranean was amazing.
After taking the 21 bus to Luminy you can hike to the Calanque. It's a really beautiful hike through the park and you have some great views.
The beach itself was very beautiful and the water was crystal clear, but it is exhausting to get there. After a 45min bus ride from Marseilles center, you had to walk and "climb" for about 40min through the zone which was a national park (If I remember it right). If you have to possibility to go there by ship it would be perfect, otherwise this trip is more suitable for nature-lovers.
