This was our big trip out but only about 1hr 20mins from Coast.....fantastic place and look forwrad to seeing more when the kids dont need a beach !. Hotter than coast and glad we did a shortish route, a bonus is the landart at the start using natural materials.
We spent a week in the Languedoc and loved going to Moureze! We are a family of 4 with daughters who are 6 and 8 and we explored the LE PARC DES COURTINALS. The views were amazing and it was one of the highlights of our week. We parked in the village and didn't go as far up as it sounds like some other reviewers went but still had beautiful views and it was not too challenging for the children. We would love to go back again when they are older.
Did the blue walk at end of June. Walking shoes recommended as definitely scrambling some of the way. Worth the effort and views at the top were amazing,
The Cirque de Moureze is a natural wonder comparable, in my experience, to the Grand Canyon of the Colorado. It is vast, mind-boggling, and beautiful. One can spend as much time as one wants, from quietly viewing from the rim to driving to the valley or making the trek down. This is a visit I will remember always.
We arrived on a sunny spring morning and paid our 2 euros to park. A very helpful German lady provided us with as many English language leaflets as she could find. We wandered into the village and followed the signs around the cirque. There are 3 different walks depending on your time and fitness levels. We did the short walk as we were planning a visit to the nearby Lac de Salagou as well. This is not a walk for those with mobility difficulties. DO take bottles of water on a hot day. Be prepared to do the equivalent of a step class up and down the rocks. But this maintains it as nature intended. The sound of insects, warm scent of wild rosemary, and fantastic scenery made this a memorable couple of hours. The dolomite are spectacular and the view through them to the village at the end of the walk is what chocolate boxes were made for. Do visit.
We visited on a cool, sunny January day so we did not experience the heat that others did. The scenery was quite spectacular and we thoroughly enjoyed our walk. The village was also quite nice. As others have suggested the Cirque de Moureze can be combined with a visit to the Lac de Salagou and even Clermont L’Herault and possibly Saint Guilhem le Desert.Off season one does not have to pay for parking
It was interesting to see the different shapes of the rock formations but I wouldn't go again. I wouldn't class it as a 'must see' visit for visitors, but if you're interested in geology, then it may be worth a visit. The visit to Cirque de Moureze could be combined with your visit to Lac de Salagou which is spectacular...... a mini Switzerland and is spectacular at any time of the year!
This is a very pleasant spot which hides some fantastic scenery. The little village was very quiet when we visited a week ago, but the restaurants and the (good value) buvette just by the car park were open. After our walk we had lunch in the buvette. There are several walks of different degrees of difficulty. Because we were 3 generations with a 3 month old baby to carry we did the "easy" yellow trail. It is well laid out and waymarked and takes you through the heart of the strange dolomitic outcrops which make up the landscape. Very pleasant but as a previous reviewer has stated it was hot even when overcast and water is needed. Even on this trail boots or very sturdy trainers are recommended to avoid slips and twisted ankles.
Must be done, but we did the 2 hour walk with no water in the heat of the day - don't. Spectacular scenery.
Since I am kid I spend lot of time in the town close to Moureze (Salasc). So I know pretty well the Cirque. It is a good place for walking around. Don't forget to reach the top of the Mount Liausson, with a good lookout of the Lake!
This is quite a "hidden treasure", and a fantastic place to go for a little hike. The site has several paths of differnt length and difficulty to choose from. We wandered around a bit in and around the village to even find where the paths started, because it wasn't all that clearly marked. And when we found it, the sign we found only had partial information for some of the trails, so we don't know how long or difficult the other paths are. We took the blue trail, and it took us about 2 h 45 mins including a "lunch with a view" at the top.The path goes through a very rocky forest of sorts, with lots of tall rock formations. Quite a unique landscape. Then the "climb" starts for the summit of the 500m high mountain. (No climbing equipment needed, but good hiking shoes are recommended, because it is pretty steep and rocky) And even if you work up quite a sweat climbing, it's definately worth the effort! From the top you have a spectacular view of the the rock formations you just passed through on one side, and Lac du Salagou on the other side. Just beautiful! We were here in March, and the weather was perfect for the hike. I don't think I'd recommend doing this in the summer months, though, because of the heat and lack of shade.
