The Eglise don't have anything special, as it's a small, not-so-well-preserved church. On the other hand, the atmosphere is very interesting, as everything looks as it was exactly as in the past. Plus, Joan of Arc and Charles VII attended a mass there, what is historic value enough to make the church important. If you get to the church and it looks like it's closed, it's probably not. Try to open the (small) door and you will be allowed to enter. As Provins cam be very cold due the winds, they keep the doors closed.
This cathedral was built in the 1200's and never completed and given up in the 1400's. A quick walk through gives you an idea of how cathedrals were built and what the great cathedrals must have looked like during construction. It will only take 15 minutes and is well worth the walk through.
This is a cathedral that could have been amazing, but was never finished. The stone work soars beautifully, but there are only a couple of stained glass windows that were completed, and very little statuary or paintings. If you're going to Provins it's worth a peek, but you probably won't spend more than 15 or 20 minutes there. The good news, though, is that it's open all day, unlike a lot of other Provins attractions that have very limited hours in the winter. Note that Joan of Arc and Charles the VII stopped and prayed here on their way to do battle in Champagne. Pretty neat.
Very nice church which was visited by Joan of Arc. The inside is so spacious with a huge ceiling when we arrived it was lovely to sit and listen to a service which was underway.
You won’t miss this church when you visit Provins. It was a huge, classy construction close to the Caesar’s Tower, a mixture of Romanesque, Gothic, and Classic in its architecture and interior design. It was not a fancy or upkeep building and many people even considered it too simple and “empty” inside. However, if you realized how old this church was and its history you might want to stay a little longer to appreciate its existence. It was not really “nothing to see” inside merely because it was huge and kind of lack of color. It was covered with creamy stone walls and actually bright. Spend time on some of the details and the aged furnitures, the carvings, the beautiful piece of stained glass designed without figures, and the great stone works. Its beauty came from its uniqueness and simplicity. When I looked at the monument of Joan of Arc, who was here in 1429 with the king Charles Vll, I no longer wondered why this church was special and why it was one the religious heritage of France. Happy to be able to visit this place.
What is so stunning about this collegiate church is the tremendous height of the interior. It simply soars and you feel awed. The simplicity of everything else adds to this impression. Knowing that Jeanne d'Arc and King Charles VII had heard mass there made it all the more special for me.
If you got used with massive churches in France then this church looks average.Inside it is quite empty where it has some beautiful items inside as well.It is worth to visit while you are in Provins. It is just next to the "castle".
Joan of Arc and Charles VII attended the office there. Beautiful dome. Worth a visit if you are in Provins.
Achei bonito e interessante.
