Thanks for your review. You can enjoy a swim in the river as this one is really clean if you are tired paddling.

Thank you for your review. No specific skills are required to canoe the river as you saw it.

Low season is the best to enjoy a quiet river with nearly nobody paddling it. Thanks for your review anyway.

Plan and fail. This activity requires planning to maximise the experience. In my case I planned expertly, it was the execution of the plan that left a little to be desired. On the plus I planned to go kayaking with Canoes Loisers before I left the UK. My planning was so meticulous I had even ordered wet bags from eBay to keep my valuables dry.  I had also put Canoes Loisers into my satnav so the car would bring me right to the destination. The travelling to the destination was perfect. You cannot put the destination exactly into the satnav, but when you cross the bridge over the dordogne at Vitrac you have Canoes Loisers on the left and Canoe Copeyre on the right. At Canoes Loisers there is plenty of parking space. This was where the execution of my plans started to go wrong. With five people in the group, nobody had packed a picnic. The thought of stopping at the banks of the dordogne with a small bottle of wine, a baguette and fromage was something I had looked forward to doing. Unfortunately I had even forgotten the small cool bag and the frozen gel packs were still in the freezer! However the execution of the plan was about to get worse. There are three types of water craft available; 1. Sit in (covered) kayaks, sit on kayaks and Canoes (all with one plus capacity). I chose a sit in Kayak as I thought the cover would keep my rucksack dry. This was a schoolboy error and the sit in Kayak trades a perception of dryness with reduced stability. On top of which I didn't get a dry barrel - in part because I didn't ask and, more importantly, a sit in Kayak has neither a dry space or room for a dry barrel. In spite of my limitations in hiring the crafts (I have concluded that Canoes would have been better) the hiring was straight forward and both English and broken French is understood. We received our life jackets but not much in the way of a briefing with each party member thinking another understood the instructions. The important thing was that we stopped after three bridges, the bridge at the centre (which we had just crossed in the car) was the first bridge. But most importantly, which nobody registered was that you approach the third bridge from tight on the left or you will be carried by the current to Beynac. We did note however that the bus leaves the exit point at 15 minutes after each hour. At the commencement you are given a briefing sheet and it is recommended to read it (we didn't). That said we really enjoyed the kayaking. I guess a Canoe with back support would have been better but that's why TripAdvisor is read! While a sit in Kayak is pretty unstable I was able to retrieve my camera from the dry bag on a number of occasions, shoot off some memorable photographs and get the camera back in the drybag without soaking the camera. I did consider if I should have brought the underwater case for the camera. The jury's out on this point. The advantage is that you don't have to carry the camera in a drybag so it's more accessible. However in my experience you tend to get water droplets on the camera lens and as I didn't flood my normal compact, it worked well for me without the underwater case. The day would have been better if I had executed the planning a little better but it was still a great day for €17 each. We did the Vitrac to Castelnaud circuit which was sufficient for someone who hadn't been in a Canoe for thirty years. Top tips: 1. bring a change of clothes for afterwards and wear light clothes 2. bring a picnic 3. wear footwear which are suitable for wading 4. get a wet barrel and/or bring wet bags 5. consider a Canoe over a Kayak for stability, possible back rest (this may be important) and storage (the clue's in the name CANOES Loisers!) 6. Wear a hat, de riguer sunnies and suncream. 7. Listen carefully to the attendant (pickup times etc) and read the briefing note before departing. But most importantly, plan AND follow the plan - for an unforgettable day and memories on the dordogne.
