While in Tallinn we visited the Old Town. We stopped at the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, an orthodox cathedral, located at the Upper Town known as Toompea, a few blocks from the Town Hall Square. The structure is amazing and you definitely don’t want to pass by. Frankly, the outside of the building was very impressive and the walk around was sufficient.
It looks great ,too bad its onder construction already for some time already so it sucks a litle when you wanna photograph it without any ladders and stuff but maybe it will finish soon :-)
A must-see in Tallinn. Both the exterior and the interior are marvelous! It's situated on a hill, so it's a nice place to start exploring the old town.
The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, in my opinion is the most stunning, of many beautiful churches, in all of Tallinn. It is a magnificent Russian Orthodox church with its identifiable "onion" domes. I will say that while the inside of the church is beautiful, there isn't much to see. I suggest getting great views and photographs of this church from the tower of St. Mary's Cathedral, (near by), and the tower of St. Olaf's church (for a distant view). My photographs were worth every step up those towers. Don't miss seeing this cathedral up close, but also from afar!
It's a very beautiful church in the russian-orthodox style. The entry is free. Also inside it's an amazing building, everything is designed to the smallest detail.
Because of its location up on a hill the Alexander Nevskij-cathedral dominates the Tallinn skyline, but since it's a beautiful church that is not a bad thing. Both the inside as well as the outside are worth checking out and for the ones looking for a place to enjoy tranquillity, this isn't a bad choice.
The cathedral is very imposing and can be seen from afar, we could even see it from the airport. It is beautiful and looks typically Russian. Inside is lovely too but I feel you get a better feeling of the grandeur of the cathedral from outside. It looks beautiful at night too under lights.
If you are in Tallinn, you can not miss a visit to the amazing Alexander Nevsky Cathedral! Stunning arcitecture, beautiful colours and a calm and a good atmosphere to reflect on youre life and youre trip. I cannot describe what this visit meant to me with just words. Im not religious, but to be in a place like this, is just amazing.
Built on the grave of Estonian hero Kalev (Linda's husband) and ordered by Tsar Alexander III, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is a stunning Russian Orthodox church, a spectacular example of opulence and architectural masterpiece.
This magnificent onion domed structure celebrating the Orthodox Church stands tall and proud on Toompea Hill overlooking the sprawling walls and town below. It is a splendid mix and presentation of one of God's sanctuaries. Enjoy and consume the interior and it's decor. A must see for all coming to Tallinn.
Overlooking the Old Town this is a place to go! Typical Russian cathedral with lots of gold, candles everywhere and in every corner a small little altar again with candles and pictures of different holy people. Outside the old women are sitting or standing at or on the stairs and asking for money. Have little money for them, too.Really a place worth visiting. And if you can manage to make it over Easter - I presume this might be a lasting experience!
Looks more impressive from outside. Interior was under renovation in Feb, no service, and not allowed to wander around inside.
This was the first Russian Orthodox church I have ever seen, and it really was a sight - especially when it was lit up in the evening by warm light so that the onion domes contrasted the cold, blue sky.The interior was a bit of a downer after the beautiful, ornamented exterior, but they were doing some reconstructional work while I visited it so I can't really tell. The church itself is really contrasting the medieval old town, there's no other building like it in Tallinn. Like a spice in a curry. Definitely worth a visit.
This pompous building covered with shining gilding looks completely out of place in this medieval castle with Gothic cathedrals. It is the only building in the whole Old City of Tallinn which just does not fit there. It would be much better to build Orthodox church in some other place, outside of city walls.
