For all train lovers with history, I can tell you VISIT the place!:).It´s great, low prices all have afford and match trains to see, free parking outside if you go by car, small play stuff outside for smaller kids and you also can go for a small ride in a older train as a activity with you in your friends or family.Have a blast I don't think you will be unhappy.RegardsJimmy
A lot of trains and modeltrains at the warehouse. Nice visit and fun to go by train/bus to and from the museum and railwaystation.
We took our 2 year old son to this museum and he just loved it, and we quite enjoyed it as well! This is far better than the transportation museum in Stockholm, and there were a lot of activities for the kids as well, such as a play room with model trains, dress up train station, Lego city with a train going around, outdoor mini train to ride, and little toy ride-ons in the play ground. We also enjoyed climbing up and down the old train models and seeing the insides. A very enjoyable and educational outing for us all!
OK, I'm a railway nut, but I think most people would find this museum delightful, from the clockwork model trains in the entrance to the great brooding steam locos in the halls. There are excellent facilities for children, with a miniature railway and lots of things to play with indoors, plus a good bookshop with toys. Gävle is about an hour's journey from Stockholm on the train, but to my mind well worth the trip. Be warned that the museum is about half an hour's walk from the town centre, but there are also buses - and they take credit cards! :-)
I had read about this museum from my search on internet and I did not know what to expect. I was surprised and amazed over the quality of the museum. The structured layout and the wealth of information that this museum delivers are well worth a visit, even if you are not into trains, this should be on your bucket list. After you gone through the exhibition you will have a much better understanding 'of how it all started' as well as the impact the trains has had on the world we are now living in.I can definitely recommend this attraction!
In an old Roundhouse you find the Swedisch RR Museum. Starting from the history, till the 1960 you find loco's, coaches and descriptions of the the history. An intresting 2 hours short break for those who like tains.
This museum has old railroad cars and engines on show, very interesting. Also there is a miniature railiroad show worth seeing.
Was in Sweden through work and had some time spare. As this was a transportation thing we thought we'd nip in to the rail museum. Massive engineering a must for fans of steam
This is a great way to spend a day out. Even if you are not in to trains there is things do for everybody. Apart from the Swedish railway history (with support from English and German train makers) there is other things to see and do. They have now a exhibition around the Swedish road development. It is worth a trip by car but it is possible to walk (along the railway line of course) from the Railway station. The dining facilities could be better.
You don't need to be a train enthusiast to enjoy this museum. A clean uncluttered layout which flows. interesting exhibits giving an insight into Swedish transport history make for an enjoyable experience. Nice staff, a pleasant cafe and book shop coupled with the spaciousness means a relaxing time, in contrast to many European museum visits.
We went all the way to Gävle for a weekend and this particular museum. it was well worth the trip. It has something for everyone, when everything displayed and experienced there was just so rich. My little boy of 3 has not stopped talking about it, and wishes we could go there every weekend.
We needed something to do for a couple of hours so decided to drop in here. Immediately we realised there was far more to see than we had time for! As with all steam trains, the sheer scale of them is always impressive. There's lots of side displays giving information about the actual engines and rail history in Sweden. As well as the engines inside there are quite a few outside amongst the former railway buildings. There is also a cafe serving a nice range food and drinks.Well worth visiting if you are in the town or locality :)
It has been a few years since I have been to the museum but oh the fond memories. This is a fantastic attraction for a family or the transportation fam. As a railfan that has traveled the world admiring railway museums this one is near the top of my list. Very well done displays and what a fantastic collection of historically significant locomotives and railway artifacts. I hope to return soon and I highly recommend stopping in you have a chance.
It took you through history of Swedish Rail with Actual Trains and Cars through Years
My family and I just spent the morning at the Sveriges Jarnvagsmuseum (Swedish railway museum) in Gavle. In our group was a 3 year old boy and he had a great time. There are toys for little people and a little train ride for them to take (10kroner extra) and many of the steam engines though static, can be climbed on and you can get inside some of the rail cars too. The museum is in a nice park that would allow picnic lunches and has lots of shade. There are wash rooms and a cafe for coffee and snacks. If you are a real train buff you could spend hours looking at the 55 1/10th scale models of trains produced in Sweden. As well the is a vast display of "N" gauge rolling stock and modern engines showing in detail the variation in design over the last 100 years. Many of the exhibits feature excellent explanations in English as well as the original Swedish.
