On a rainy and very cloudy but the last day in Switzerland we had to take this trip for our children who were looking forward to this trip. The ride on the train was beautiful and the rains did not bother us there but then onward the walk and the wait in the rains to the chocolate factory was not very fun. The station was deserted and you would not find a snack! Once we entered the factory it was all amazing! The films and the demos were nice but the best part is when you see all the chocolate being poured out on belts and land into the tasting room! You can taste/eat all you want! There is a little theater right outside the chocolate room. We sat and enjoyed the history of Cailler with a nice box of chocolate. Also bought some at the gift shop as souvenirs. Took the train back and enjoyed the ride back too. Just make sure you pack a few sandwiches. It was incredibly difficult to find something to eat with picky little eaters on the house!
By asking the ticket clerk for only round trip tickets to the chocolate factory, you take a scenic ride through the forest, with one, easy, train transfer. Tickets to the factory itself are included in the fare. After the factory, take the train back and disembark in Gruyere. The cheese factory is across the street from the train station, but was not the highlight of the trip for us. Then a short, but steep walk up to the town. Museums, Castle, Restaurants are all located in this beautiful town. Back on the next train to Montreux. There is no need to book the much more expensive guided tour- "Chocolate Train" to the same places.
The Chocolate Train and tour of the Chateau de Gruyers and the Cailler chocolate factory were a fun day. The scenery along the way was very nice.
The tour guide was great, and everything went smoothly except for the rain! Money and time well spent.
This was supposed to be for my 8 yr old son. But apparently even 35 old ppl like me and my wife loved it and so did 61 yr old mom and dad. It has something for everyone. The train is a classic old engine train. Its interiors are done very nicely and princely. You get Hot chocolate and Muffin when you start your journey to Bric for the Cheese factory tour. The cheese factory tour is also excellent. Then you go to a village where there is a Chateau which has so much to be seen, a very picturesque town with stone clad streets resembling of the 15th century gone by.. The weather was perfect which made everything around it also more beautiful. Then we went to Callier Choclate factory for the chocolate making tour and chocolate tasting. The highlight had to be the sampling of chocolates that they offer. I guess you can eat your heart's full out there. My son had his mouth smeared with chocolates and he was so high on Cocoa that he had enough energy to last till mid-night. It was awesome fun. Reminder: If you are Vegetarian like us, just a gentle reminder to pack your snacks and lunch with you. you are back by 5:30 pm and the village where you stop over would not have much options. Maybe a pizza or pasta shop. But we came from our tour in Italy and had our fair share of pizza's... So we were done with that. But do not miss this tour. BOOK YOUR TICKETS EARLY... They are gone too fast.
We wanted to just go to Gruyere for the cheese tasting and visit to the castle but it was so difficult to arrange that we chose the chocolate train experience. Very interesting tour of the chocolate factory and lots of tasting available. Tasting at the cheese factory was minimal but the castle was worth seeing. Great to eat lunch here at Auberge de la Halle for the fabulous soup and grilled cheese with ham & tomato on bread. Yum!
Just fantastic-hang the expense, you won't be disappointed, especially with the trip to Gruyeres. The train is comfortable, air conditioned and the hostess was very entertaining!
we saw this golden train on our way to the Broc Fabrique chocolate factory. We however took the regular train and had a lovely experience despite not taking this pricey trip by this train
Croissants and chocolate on board this trip. Toured the chocolate factory which was very informative as was the Guyere factory and castle. Would highly recommend
Vintage train cars are quaint, but would not have enjoyed it during heat of summer as there is no air conditioning. They serve chocolate croissants, coffee or hot chocolate along the way. The cheese factory at Gruyere was, well, cheesy, but the town itself is a nice place to enjoy lunch and explore small shops. Views are exceptional. The chocolate factory (Callier) at Broc is a wonderful tour. Very well done, explaining the history of chocolate, a trip through the actual factory, and the tasting room and store. All in all, en enjoyable day.
We had problems booking a reservation online, and ultimately decided to visit the chocolate & cheese factories on our own - we had a great time on our own schedule and saved a bundle (with SwissPass). All the train rides & both factory tours were covered with the Pass.We reversed the Chocolate Train order and went straight to Broc (a little later in the morning - we have teenagers who like to sleep in). The tour was a little hokey, but unlimited sampling at the end and a huge gift shop. You can probably get cheaper chocolate of similar quality at the local grocery stores, but they had a nice selection of souvenir packages to take back for friends and family. Then we hopped on the train towards Montreux, stopping in Gruyeres. At mid-afternoon, we had missed the cheese-making parts of the process (which occur at 9 then again just after lunch), but still did the tour. Again, pretty touristy, but informative. We returned to Montreux late afternoon on one of the vintage "Chocolate Train" train cars - we had no problem getting four seats together that late in the day. With no reservation or extra fees!
This was a dream come true! The train was olde worlde & spacious. We enjoyed coffee & pain au chocolate on the way up with fantastic views. The train ride up takes 2 hours, you then get off for the Gruyere cheese factory. Here you tour with a walkie talkie thing in your ear & get a cheese sample pack. It was good. Then you can squash into the shop with everyone else & spend hideous amounts of money on very expensive cheese & cheese related items. A bus then takes you 10mins to Gruyere town which is very quaint & very touristy. You have a bit over 2 hours here - can I suggest you byo your lunch - & visit the castle (extra cost ) but worth it. The bus then takes you 15mins to the chocolate factory, where you squash in for the tour then get a little sample wrapped in foil at the end. But wait there's more! A room of all sorts of chocolates- join everyone shuffling around the square benches sampling every one until you feel not so good. There are signs asking you not to take any chocolate out, but no one is there to smack you. Into the shop to spend spend spend on that delicious dark gold & maybe a hot choc or icecream at the small cafe. Then board the train for the Journey back - go on - buy a glass of champagne - it's 12Ch but this will actually get you 2 glasses as it comes in a mini bottle.
The trip overall was great you go out early morning with some chocolate corrosions and coffee or hot chocolate to start your chocolate adventure. First you visit the cheese factory were you learn about the history of this famous Gruyère cheese. Then they take you to a small beautiful town up the hill to have some lunch and enjoy the amazing scenery . And Finally , you vist the chocolate factory which is heaven on earth a really nice factory that tells you all about this beautiful coco bean and about the factory's history . Overall , a great trip for adults as well as kids ((True joy))
Oh, boy!! This was a great trip through the mountains to visit a cheese factory in Gruyeres and a chocolate factory in Broc. Gruyeres is a very enchanting town, I loved it although I didn´t have much time to visit the castle there, but I will be back soon!!
We enjoyed our day's excursion of the train but a couple of disappointing elements. We thought we had booked a window seat but apparently not - this wasn't clear. We traveled in a new carriage unlike the old Pulman in the pics! (great company however and made the day even better) Service was rather officious on occasion. Breakfast was a chocolate croissant and coffee or hot chocolate. Gruyere and cheese factory was interesting and visit to the chocolate factory was delicious - stay as long as you want in the tasting room and eat as much as you want - we did! Chocced out! Would have enjoyed a complementary drink on the ride back but, sadly, it's not included.
