An oval-shaped square is located at crossing of roads and a 40 meter monument to those who gave their lives in the Great Patriotic War (WWII) dominates here with the eternal flame at its base. The Square is a sacred place for everyone in our country as one in three Belarusians died or perished during the war. On Fridays and Saturdays I could see many newly married couples visiting the place to make a special wedding photo and pay tribute to those who contributed to the victory.
When I was here young cadets were shown how to do the " goose walk" For those who are interested in the whereabouts of Lee Harvey Oswald . Lee had a apartment on Komunitskaya 4 , facing Victory Square (1960-1962). The monuments are impressive with an extensive underground area (eternal flame)
Unusual to find an open area mentioned in a travel guide. What made this interesting for me when I saw it two years ago was the fact that most of it is underground. Very interesting shopping precinct set under the square. The overground square is equally dramatic and itself worth looking at when you are travelling through the city.
It was the first time I was in Minsk and I really enjoyed the view. Minsk is a very organized city and people are friendly. This monument is something you can't miss there. I recommend it.
The monument is at the middle of the city's hart. But is is not so interesting like it's own history. There are a group of young students that appears from time to time near the fire to guard it.
One of the most typical landmarks of Minsk. Old soviet coat of arm and red (golden) star is still can be observed on the top of obelisk. Also pay attention of the details of head sculpture of Lenin on the side of the monument: Stalin's face also used to be there, but as his glory started to shade, the face of Stalin was converted into Lenin's ear on the sculpture. On the top of the surrounding buildings still the old soviet propaganda text can be seen.
With an interest in Soviet architecture this was right up my street! At our visit there was a ceremonial changing of the guard. The displays around the monument are detailed and typically soviet. Read up what is so special about the portrait of Lenin on the soviet flag!
You have to visit this square to better understand and appreciate the history of Belarus. The tall dark statute with its associated fire provide a nice opportunity for those who like to explore communism by their eyes.
This is a very big square and it shows that old soviet arichitectural striving for large. But content is missing out
A remarkable way to honour the memory of a Nation's fallen heroes. I laid flowers in their due respected and i was impressed by this particular tradition.
Built as a symbol of respect for the memory of the Soviet forces that defeated the Nazis on the eastern European theater in the Second World War, it serves as a visitor's starting point for a number of purposes. The children's attractions at Gorky Park stretch out by the river, the circus is not far away, and the Svislach River bank has plenty of boats to ride. The least marked tourist sites though are upstream from Gorky Park. On Kamunistychnaya Vulitsa (Communist Street), within Building No. 4, lived Minsk's most infamous American visitor, Lee Harvey Oswald. While exploring "defection" to the Soviet Union, he lived in this location a couple years before returning to the States and securing his dark place in history during the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. This was the center of his "kolpak," or home neighborhood, where this suicidal ex-Marine was constantly watched and his life choreographed by the local KGB office. The streets here marked the scenes of his life in the Soviet Union, and its still relatively easy to imagine his time here.
A genuine Soviet era square still alive and kicking today in Minsk. Well worth a visit to soak up the grand buildings and the towering monument still decked with Lenin faces, Soviet stars (also on the lamp posts) hammer and sickles and other Communist logos. Look out for the eternal flame too, burning away in the middle of this busy city.
Awesome place with wonderful monuments to those who sacrificed their lives for the Soviet Union! I've never seen a place with streets this clean!
The monument to a Great Victory of Soviet army. When you are here - know, that a part of memorial is in the pedestrian subway - please, see it too. On the top of buildings it is written in Russian "The people's feat is immortal"
This "attraction" is worth visiting not because it's something beautiful, exciting and unforgettable, because it's none of the above compared to landmarks elsewhere. This place is worth visiting to see a piece of Minsk history and Belarusian people in general. The monument in the center of the square is dedicated to the WWII victory of the soviet people. It is a special place for many who are proud of their history and people. On the other hand, the very design of the square, the slogans on top of the buildings, the whole look of this place will transport you back to the soviet Belarus where all city and town squared looked identical - and still do. This place is not only the memorial to the past, but also the reflection of the country's present. Not much has changed since those times.
