The Vidraru Dam is an artificial lake situated between Fruntii Mountains and Ghitu mountains. It's a good stop to take some photos in your way to Transfagarasan road.
The Dam is on Transfagarasan road. The view is fantastic on both sides of the dam. If you want to have a overview of the aria, you need to climb the stairs or even walk up on the hill. From there you can see it all. On the dam you can make bungee jumping.
Vidraru dam was finished in 1966, for producing hidroelectricity. Construction took 5 years. The total surface of the lake is 3,930,000 sq m, 10.3 km in length. You can make boat trips, 30 minutes costs only 10 lei ( 2 Eur , 3 Usd ).Near the lake you can visit Castle Poenari - Dracula Palace
We had a driver recommended by our B&B take us to both the dam & to Poenari fortress, the ruins of Vlad Dracula's "real" castle. Although you have to climb up 1480 steps to reach the fortress, it was all in the shade & not a bad hike up at all. The fortress & the views from the top are amazing. Would highly recommend this to anyone visiting the area, as long as you're up for the climb. You won't regret it.
We stopped at the Dam while driving through Transfagarasan. The view is fantastic on both sides of the dam. It takes about half an hour to visit the site. If you want to have a overview of the aria, you need to climb the stairs or even walk up on the hill. From there you can see it all.
It's a really nice view on both sides of the dam. It's a very deep reservoir, and it's amazing to look down on the "dry" side of the dam and see the entire structure. The reservoir is really beautiful and peaceful looking with deep blue water, towering cliffs, and pristine vegetation. I also saw what looked like tourist boat tours. Might be worth checking out.Budget extra time in case there's a traffic congestion here, especially if you go on nice summer weekends. We spent a bit of time there. The dam is a bottleneck, and people like to pull over on the sides of the narrow road across it, and this really slows traffic down. Totally worth it tough!
The Dam is very high, on the side of the river it can give you headaches, on the side of the lake you can relax and enjoy the beautiful view. People should give more importance to keep the place clean and respect the mountains and forest, some places are really full with garbage. Arriving there has a problematic issue..the roads are tight, a lot of trucks passing always and ruins the surface layer of the ONLY way of getting here.
Go up the stairs to the Worker's monument and capture the picture of both sides of the dam with water and without water - breathtaking !
The landscape is spectacular. On one side of the dam is the huge Vidraru lake and on the other side in a precipise what is left of the waters of the Arges river .
It`s a place where you can stop for a couple of minutes while driving down from Fogaraska Pass and climb onto a viewpoint above the dam.
you should visit the Vidraru, it has a great view, and the road to it is spectacular. The Transfagarasan Road is one of the best roads in the world. this road starts from the vidraru and it ends to fagaras city, so don`t miss it.
After making the mandatory stop to admire the scenery from the dam and take photos, if you have 45 minutes at your disposal, you can go to Posada Vidraru hotel, buy tickets at the reception and go on a boat trip on the lake. You cannot park the car on the dam itself, so it is better to leave it on one of the ends, depending on busy it is (usually it is very busy).
If you are in Curtea de Arges, drive north on DN7C to Baraj Vidraru (Vidraru Dam) and enjoy marvellous views from the obersation deck. See the metal statue of Prometheus holding lightning bolts. On a calm day the waters of Lake Vidraru reflect the surrounding mountains and tour boat quietly ply its waters. Drive further north around the east shore of the lake to be rewarded of more spectacular views.
I wrote a separate review for Transfagarasan, as part of this trip. Vidraru Dam will leave you speechless as well as Transfagarasan, particularly if you have a sunny day.If you have time book a boat trip in the Vidraru lake.In order to build this dam and the Transfagarasan a super human effort and huge financial resources were used. Just make sure you do not rush through this passing.I think they used to do bungee jumping from this dam.
Romanian nature will charm everyone who comes here, especially in Arges area.mountains, rivers, dams, beautiful landscapes... You will have a great weekend if you decide to go there with family or friends.
