You could spend a week in there looking at tomb stones... This is larger than Necoprolis in Glasgow...Amazing site with such a variety in years of history.

If you like wandering through cemeteries, this is for you. Opened around 1845 this is one of the largest council run cemeteries in Britain. Built on a hillside near the centre of Greenock with historic grave stones in a lovely setting. There is a leaflet available and if you follow the routes you will get an idea of some of the fascinating history belonging to the people buried there.

How can you review a cemetery? I don't visit here for fun. I visit as I have loved ones buried here. I personally don't think it is a place to be joked about or ridiculed. It is a peaceful place but then cemeteries are meant to be. There have been vandals who have knocked headstones over and they have just been left that way. It is a place that should be shown respect not to be reviewed.

Glad to see a local charitable group have produced a guide map to help people find fascinating headstones. Well done. The gravestone with the dog and the chap killed in the american civil war are my favourites. But many more fascinating ones and great views up the top.

Beautiful grounds. Vast and quite hilly, so bring your walking shoes. Crematorium staff was very helpful.

This is a quite amazing place with many surprising features. A seldom known fact is that the graves are segregated into Catholic, Protestant, Jewish and paupers with the latter being the saddest of all as it has no markings whatsoever. There is also the memorial to Greenock's Blitz civilian victims from the second world war. There are also the graves of Mary Campbell (Robert Burns' Highland Mary) and the family of engineer, James Watt. These remains were relocated to here from the old West Kirk graveyard which was displaced by a new shipyard for Messrs Harland and Wolff. I understand that the other graves were also relocated at least in part and that those charged with the removal were given a bounty for what was a potentially dangerous work for many of the remains were of people who died of dreadful plagues so common in a busy seaport.I have taken two stars off this review because the local authority are not in the least diligent in keeping the place in good order for there are numerous damaged monuments and plots that never seem to be attended to. Also, it is a well-known den for drug addicts and sundry bad elements. The gates which are listed monuments have been welded open so that the police can access the place quickly. Sadly, it can at times be quite dangerous so take care and don't go alone.

Very well kept grounds and the garden of remembrance is beautiful with an outstanding view. Paths are well kept and did not see any litter.

As an ex Greenock girl, the memories of this vast cemetery are poignant. Somewhat run down these days, but hugely evocative of a once great shipbuilding town and it's citizens. Robbie Burns 'Highland Mary' is buried in these hallowed grounds. Worth spending a day walking round trying not to get lost. Take your camera for lots of atmospheric photographs.

moriepie

has highland marys statue and grave and many other historic characters buried there

I think it may be true that Greenock Cemetery has more miles of roads than any other in the UK. Whatever the truth, this is an interesting place.
