This is a really interesting museum. It tracks the history of the Royal Burgh by explaining the royal connections (Mary, Queen of Scots, Linlithgow Palace etc), commerce (linen, brewing and distilling, brick manufacture, spinning and weaving and the cooperage and so on) and the development of the Burgh over the years. There is also good coverage of the effect of World War 1 on the town.Unfortunately we ran out of time and missed the gardens so we will definitely be back! .
The museum tells the story of the traditional trades associated with Linlithgow particularly of the textile industries but the garden is a real gem. It's a traditional rigg shape ie each house had a kitchen garden an inner rigg whilst keeping cattle on the outer riggs in pastureland away from the house. The garden rises up on terraces each packed with traditional fruit, vegetables and particularly herbs. Not only is it lovely on a June day it's also extremely informatively labelled.
Lovely museum telling the history of the local area. The gardens in particular the herb garden is beautiful and on a sunny day a great place to sit and watch the world go by, albeit very slowly.
A very well done Museum and lots of history and information on the area and the garden is beautiful.
Interesting local history, well presented, right in the High Street. Well worth a visit. We visited during the folk festival so had some live singing in the garden. Added a lovely atmosphere to an interesting garden. Do look for the ice house. Lots of steps as there are several terraces on the side of the hill.
From the front entrance there is nothing to jump out at you but inside there is a calmness and tranquillity. The History boards inside are informative and as you leave the House at the back you come upon a lovely garden . Its just a lovely garden to to breathe in some good vibes .
If you decide to visit Linlithgow to see the palace or indeed the loch can I recommend that you pop in for a visit to Annet House in Linlithgow High Street, built in 1787 as a house for a merchant family called Bartholomew, it offers a great look back into the past of Linlithgow with displays on the history of Linlithgow, the people both prominent and local, and there is a great little garden and children's maize. Take your time, walk around, immerse yourself in history and then enjoy the delights (best in the summer months) of the garden.
A small but surprisingly informative museum housed in a Georgian house on the main street. Exhibits range from fascinating displays about the development of the town to informative ones about the Jacobite kings who built the nearby palace. There is also an interesting garden to the rear, though the plants were past their best at the time of our visit. Well worth the hour or so it takes to look round.
We walked around the museum and then into the garden. Right at the top of the garden is a small maze and we sat on a bench taking in the afternoon sun.
Learned a lot about my own area. Good visit. Not your typical small town museum.
Donation for an excelllent museum of the history of the area.
If you are in Linlithgow to see the Castle, it's worth popping in to see this museum. It is typical of small town museums in that mostly it doesn't have exhibits of great monetary value, but it does have a lot of local artefacts which bring to life the experiences of the ordinary citizens of Linlithgow over the centuries. There are also some interesting exhibits related to Mary Queen of Scots. The back garden has been restored from an overgrown mess to a very pretty tranquil spot so open the door and go outside for a look. Admission is free and it will only take 15-30 minutes to see everything.
