The most convenient hike from Grasmere to a fell seems to be Helm Crag. It is not especially demanding, and the views from atop the summit, the "The Lion and the Lamb" is fantastic. Not to be missed.
Well worth the efforts to walk up, stunning views. especially of travellers rest inn - good place to stop for lunch on a circular walk
After the huge breakfast at the Travellers Rest Inn a walk up Helm crag in the snow was just what the doctor ordered
The start of the walk is off Easedale Road- opposite the bookshop in Grasmere and the first bit is paved road until you get to the stone walkway. There are signposts that mark the way but it is useful to have an idea of where you are going beforehand and as with all mountain walks proper clothing and footwear is essential! The walk is actually a steady climb up on a wavy pass on the mountain- and it took us about 3 1/2 hours to complete- we came back on the same path, although there is a ridge walk that you can complete and come through the valley instead. The views from the top were amazing- and it was very windy, but clear and cold when we went. At first we missed the fact that we had climbed onto the 'Lion' and took pics there- only when we passed it and walked a bit on the ridge we looked back and realized that the 'Lamb' was behind and we got better pictures from there! There are stunning views of the surrounding valleys and lakes. It was a bit challenging for me- but I have a knee injury- otherwise it was a great walk!
Helm Crag at around 1,000 ft is a lovely climb and only 20 mins from The Red Lion Hotel to the start of the climb. From the top one can see most of the big Lakeland mountains ( as long as it's clear!)It is a relatively easy climb as long as you heed the mountain code
I have often driven, or been driven over Dunmail Raise and remember being told as a boy EVERY TIME that the rocks on the top resemble a lion and a lamb from certain angles. When we eventually climbed up it, I wasn't disappointed with the view, so I doubt you will be either.
This might be a fairly small fell but you get amazing views from the top and if you have the time, you can do a lovely ridge walk and then come back through the valley.
For every trekking fanatic, this should be the first place to visit. Even when the weather was not so good, it's was a pleasant and not demanding trip.During winter time strongly advise to be prepared for some more demanding conditions when it will be snowing and you do plan to have a trip over the summits
If the sky is blue, then go up there and enjoy an amazing view from the top. My daughters really enjoyed it and I would recommend it:)
A short climb to the top or can be used on route to different horse shoe walks. Great views of the surrounding hills.Popular for families
We loved the walk up to it was so beautiful. An idyllic day the scenery was stunning the weather helped of course but take your camera.
Helm Craig also known as the lion & lamb is a lovely walk. The ascent is quite steady but taken at the right pace will suit most folks. We particularly enjoyed this with our 2 daughters. As its short kids don't have a lot of time to moan about it, plus the views are stunning all the way up. We first walked this in 2001 when our girls were 1 & 4 yrs old. It has been one our our regular walks ever since.
The walk up to the peak is lovely, offers fantastic views of the surrounding countryside, but following the ridge round and then descending through the valley to the SW is even better.Despite the Lakes' reputation for rainy weather, I was quite badly sun-burnt the last time I made this walk so plan accordingly!
Short sharp walk up from Easedale which can then be extended along the ridge. Beautiful views back over Grasmere and beyond.
This wasn't the first time we've climbed Helm Crag and its still a good leg stretcher. Great views on the way up over Dunmail Raise toward Keswick to the Helvellyn range and back down the Vale of Grasmere.
