When I read some of the reviews where people are dissatisfied with this place I wonder what planet they are on?Yes it is small, extend your visit by walking through the woods or down by the tarn, but it is beautifully maintained and a great spot to spend a few relaxing hours with the added bonus of a terrific view over the central fells of the Lake District, weather permitting. It is fantastic in May when the Azaleas are out and in early Autumn when the displays of Asters are superb, September for the Hydrangeas. It is also a great spot to spend a few hours with young children, take a picnic.
This is my second visit to Holehird Gardens in Summer 2014. First time when I visited in 2013, the whole garden was adorned by tulips of different colors and shades. This time, it was with amazing dahlias. This is a place for many photography options. The house was always in its majesty and charm.
What a gem! hidden in the hills behind Windermere, this beautifull garden is the work of highly skilled volounteers who clearly put a lot of pride in their work.
Well worth a visit if you are a plant lover, gorgeous borders with allseason interest, large collection of hydrangeas in the grounds, sometimes plants for sale. amazing backdrop of views across to lake and mountains, brilliant for photos.
A brilliant little gem where you can relax and enjoy a beautiful garden while the rest of the world rushes past .
Lovely gardens, visited at end of October but gardens were still blooming and simply beautiful. Very well kept, staff were exceptionally friendly. One elderly gentleman ran out in a shower of rain to offer a brolly to my wife, although I was just fetching mine from the car! Small reception had hot drinks available at little cost, and somewhere to sit in from the rain. Parking was free, as were adequately clean toilet facilities. Plenty of benches and a couple of pucnic tables - would be ideal for summer walks. Views of the lake are so picturesque.
Beautifully laid out gardens on hillside overlooking Windermere. These gardens are looked after by 60 volunteers. A must for keen gardeners. Most plants are labelled.
My boyfriend and I called here to kill a bit of time, however we really enjoyed walking around the gardens. Considering there is no charge to enter (but you can donate) we wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was. We went to Holker Hall in the afternoon (which you do have to pay to enter) but we both actually much preferred Holehird Gardens. The volunteers have done a lovely job of this place!
We have visited the garden several times now and it is always beautiful, with lots of colour in the walled garden. It is kept really neat compared to other gardens we have been to. Daffodils are a feature in the spring, and heathers in the autumn. If you have time walk down to the terrace and across the field to the tarn, also go up the hill for the walk through the woods. The only thing missing is a decent cafe, but you can take a picnic & there are toilets. Some interesting plants are available to buy, and there is an honesty box for donations.
Our friends had brought us here last year - and it rained. This year the weather was superb and we got the views as well as the plants. In September the national hydrangea collection is at its best, but we must come back in spring to see the hostas and the ferns, also national collections.Well worth seeking out.
WOW, stunning gardens with beautiful views over the fells. well worth a visit. optional donation on entry.
Worth visiting in different months as always plenty of lovely and interesting plants flowering at different times. There is the Walled Garden with many well stocked flower beds and in Spring is a field of Daffodils, later on Heathers are in flower, and Autumn colours of Maples in the woodland area. There is now a tea/coffee machine in Reception..
An outstanding garden, superbly maintained by volunteers. I visited in late September and the dahlias were superb. Some really wonderful plants and in a superb setting. I found the Lake District are expensive, particularly for parking, but this was one place I was happy to pay to get into. Highly recommended.
Holehird Gardens has been a family favourite of ours since my sister and I were very little. My Dad used to take me to feed the swans on the tarn at aged 5 and, at 24 years old, it's still one of the most beautiful places I have had the privilege to see. The gardens are a perfect afternoon out for the family with lots to look at and plenty to keep you occupied. The walled kitchen garden is stunningly kept and the tarn is well worth a stroll around. I would recommend to anyone, especially parents looking for a budget friendly way to entertain nature loving kids.
The gardens are very well looked with all of the plants labelled. About a 20-30 min walk around.Def worth a visit if you are in the area. Free entry but they ask for a donation of £4 if you would like to contribute.
