This is an active cathedral and we had to wait to enter one area as they were having services. There's plenty to see so that was no biggie, we were able to see it later. Beautiful and a must see. I just loved it.

Lovely old building with fantastic stain glass window told us a lot about the history on the day we visited they were having music practice was lovely to sit and listen

It's beautiful inside and out.Lots of free guided tours are available but I just wandered about on my own.Lots of great photo opportunities.I liked it that much I doubled the suggested donation.Lovely afternoon.

The Cathedral is beautiful, there is some Roman brickwork still intact. There are tours up to the tower. A lovely peaceful pace to visit. The staff are all really friendly. Beautiful gardens alongside part of the Roman Wall.

This is a magnificent cathedral with so much history that it should be a must go destination if your staying in Chester. An absolutely breathtaking monument, look's fabulous and offers great photographic opportunities if you enjoy taking snaps when on holiday. The Cathedral is almost 1000 years old,Romenesque architecture combined with English gothic architecture,look's stunning.Interior is just amazing, the stained glass windows are truely eye popping.The comprehensive tour is free,very informative but it is suggested that a £3 donation is about what everyone gives, a tiny price to pay to keep this amazing structure in fabulous condition for generations to come.Opening hour's are; Monday to Saturday, 9am till 5pm.Sunday, 1pm till 4pm. Easy to locate on ST WERBURGH STREET.

I was pleased to find that the Cathedral is now free to visit, which enables far more visitors to be able to visit this magnificent cathedral. We took the Cathedral at Height tour for the small cost of £8 each. It was amazing, we all had headphones so that we could all hear Abbey (our guide) without having to be in earshot, which would have been impossible in some parts of the tour. There are 216 steps, but not all in one go, so it is manageable, On this tour you get to see the cathedral from a different perspective. We were there on a sunny clear day and could make out Liverpool Cathedrals from the roof. Wonderful tour, highly recommended.

The cathedral is vast. There's so much to see. I joined a FREE guided tour which lasted about 45 minutes. The well informed guide added so much to my visit, pointing out little details I would have missed, on my own, such as the variations in the carvings of the choir stall, and the imp, perched up by one of the windows, there to scare the devil away. For fans if stained glass windows, the Cathedral is a treat with old examples as well as brand new ones. Then there are the mosaics, the cobweb picture. I could go on. Best of all, entrance is free. You donate whatever you can afford. There's a cafe too, free loos and a well stocked shop. Friendly staff abound. Don't miss it.

No fee to get in but you were asked very forcibly for a donation. Don't object to this. Would rather pay. No-one around to answer questions and when I did find someone she didn't know the answer. Part of the Cathedral was closed off for choir practice but never heard any singing. I was disappointed. Been to many religious buildings and this one comes bottom

What a magnificent place. Don't you just wonder how they built these places without the technology we have today. I would love to be able to travel back in time and watch everything going on. Have been to lots of my boys school carol services here. Brilliant atmosphere. I also have to say that my claim to fame is that a relative of mine has a plaque on one of the big pillars within the church Randolph Caldecott. So this makes it a little bit more special for us. Also a very nice cafe for when you have finished your tour. Definitely worth a visit.

beautifully kept cathedral with an informative visitor centre. the staff/volunteers were friendly and the gift shop had a good offering.

Try to plan your visit in the evening when the choir is singing. Such a beautiful experience. The cathedral grounds are gorgeous - I was lucky enough to visit when all the daffodils had just bloomed.

Chester has quite a few must see's and this is without doubt a beautiful and calming experience.And its FREE to enter. The stained glass windows are stunning and the Old Testament mosaics in the main body of the Cathedral are superb.There are numerous chapels and quiet corners to lose yourself in and it really is a must on your visit. There is also a large refectory / cafe ..... so a good place for something light or a tea or coffee.Particularly liked the peaceful Shrine of St Werbergh tucked away right at the back behind the choir stalls ..... for quietness, prayer and reflective meditation, here is were you can leave any prayer intentions and light candles.

We have been here a few times and always worth a look around. The little chapels and windows are beautiful. The garden is so relaxing. You can go up in the tower some days at an extra cost. One thing to mention that even though the big sign outside says it is free...it is not really as when you go in there are manned tills (separate from the shop) where you will be told that they "suggest" a three pound per adult "donation" while I know that the cathedral does not get any money from the council they should make it expressly clear that donations are expected this would avoid any awkwardness and prevent you feeling you have been tricked into paying which seems to bebhowbthe family before us felt. It is not a large sum of money considering you can spend a couple of hours looking around, sitting and relaxing and getting lunch in the refractory. We did not eat here this time so don't know about prices.

A beautiful tranquil place with beautiful stained glass windows. The weekly organ recital on a Thursday is well worth attending. A must see in Chester.
