Pictures don't do justice to the architecture of the ruins. I could have spent a whole day here admiring the arches still standing here after so many years and never capture how amazing they are in person. While some other reviewers have commented on the price of admission, my friends and I bought a pass that allowed us admission into all English Heritage sites for ten days for not much more than the single admission, and I recommend that option as it allows you to pop in to smaller sites for no additional cost that you might otherwise skip. The little chapel with the original (!) stained glass window and painted ceiling is just beautiful and provides a spiritual connection with others who have worshiped here for across the years.
We visited Tynemouth on a cold, blustery but sunny day. We only explored the castle from the outside, as it would've cost us £20 to get in! (1 adult ticket was about £8.95). The scenery is spectacular and the views from around and below the castle are breath-taking. I'd recommend walking out onto the pier just behind the castle to get the best views. We also enjoyed a walk along the promenade to Cullercoats. This took us about an hour but we just hopped on the metro to get back again
we visited the castle and priory one afternoon although cold and windy on the cliff top we did not notice as you took in the history. this in its time must have been a fanastic place, the ruins give you a sense of that. great information in place and stunning views, even cliff top guns to view and walk round, great day out
A very atmospheric English Heritage ruin, although the site was in use right up until the 1980s. You can watch the waves smashing over the breakwater on a windy day and there are some interesting artefacts in the visitor centre - look out for the brooch with a man's eye popping out!
We arrived late evening just before it got dark n I have to say it is gorgeous. The walk to the castle was just brilliant and it was close to Newcastle and we got the day saver metro card so it is really convenient. You could spend the day walking around enjoying the sights and history.
Visited the castle and priory on a recent trip to newcastle, stunning views across the north sea, the old watch tower does look abit out of place at the side of the castle ruins and it would be interesting if this was open for the public to explore! The cannons and guns facing out to see are spectacular, the eerie graveyard dated back to the 1800's which gave the place a fabulously spooky atmosphere :)
We called at the castle and priory late morning on a cold, but dry, January day. Almost all of the property is outside so not raining was good. We spent upwards of an hour going around using the well written guide (£3.50) and saw and interesting mixture of the ecclesiastical and military (ancient and modern). The staff were very helpful and we can recommend the ginger wine - a very good buy! All in all time well spent
Arrived here after a walk along the prom.some good information boards available and a real sense of history surrounding the place ,great views.
Beautiful. Sunday evening walk along the causeway. Stunning as the sun was setting. Castle fascinating and nice village with bars, restaurants and quirky shops. Well worth the relatively short drive from the hustle and bustle of the centre of Newcastle/Gateshead.
Tynemouth priory looks beautiful from any angle. Get yourself inside to see the true history, or in the summer there is a music festival inside.Iconic landmark that everyone should visit they're in the area.
Tynemouth was one of the best parts of our 14 day cruise. This is a lovely little town and a must visit when you are in the area. The old castle, the cute town, the ocean and shoreline and the great fish and chips. Don't miss this location.
Lovely historic site, oldest bits dating back to the 11th century. Stunning views of the Tynemouth coast line as well as a lovely view from the gate house down to Main Street. Friendly staff. Grounds partly accessible for wheelchair users.
This was my second visit to the Scary Tales that has become an annual event at Tynemouth Priory. A 9 pm start so nice and dark. The howling winds added to an atmospheric setting as we wandered among the graves listening to the tales from long ago. The actors were enjoying themselves and gave a great performance. Thoroughly enjoyable evening. If you haven't been - why not?!! Mark it on your calendar for October 2015 - I certainly will be.
I recently visited Tynemouth priory with some of my family members to attend a performance of Scarier Tales, I wasn't thrilled with the idea of wandering around the Priory after dark in the cold. However, my concerns we're soon displaced upon being drawn into the stories by the fantastic actors. It's not often you get the opportunity to visit places like this after dark and see the venue brought to life. Part of the tour visits the bunker at the very end of the Priory very dimly lit and oh my was I scared, but not as much as my husband. All in all a fantastic event, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and the A* venue and actors
We very much enjoyed walking round this historic sight. Stunning views of the coastline and an interesting history.
