You feel quite special when you walk onto the Tyne Bridge, Yes it is busy with both cars, buses and other pedestrians. but if you walk over it slowly and take in the views both ways this gives you some great views and you then realise how hilly the city can be. A DEFINATE MUST DO when in the City.

Every spring - home to the only city-dwelling colony of kittiwakes in the world. If sightseeing, from Newcastle cross the Tyne Bridge, take a right to the Hilton where you can enjoy coffee (or something stronger) with beautiful views of the Newcastle quayside. On leaving, head to the High Level Bridge for your walk back.

My five-star rating is an emotional one - whenever I return to native town from travels anywhere the sight of the Tyne Bridge in the fabulous setting of the quayside always lifts my spirits. Theories that it was the model for the Sidney Harbour Bridge are incorrect. They were designed by the same architects and built by the same engineering company (Dorman Long, based in Middlesborough) but work on the much larger Sidney Harbour version started some years before the Tyne Bridge, although the Tyne bridge was completed and opened first. It is an example of engineering at its most elegant efficiency, a thing of function but also of style and beauty. These days it is frequently adorned with huge illuminated promotional signs for major sporting events (Olympics, Great North Run, Rugby World Cup etc etc), which the Bridge is big and bold enough to shoulder, but if you can see it without such adornments it is worth it. It is almost a living thing. If you are on the bridge in heavy traffic you can feel it 'throb' to the vibration of the motors. Impressive viewed from any angle. But then I am biased! If you are visiting/viewing in the Newcastle Quayside area there are lots of bars, restaurants etc in the area.

If you go at night, there are annoyingly bright lights all along the bridge - they strip the character away. It wouldn't hurt to give the pavement a bit of a scrub too. Still nice for us locals - you know you're home when you see the bridge !

The Tyne Bridge is a through arch bridge over the River Tyne, linking Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead. The Bridge was designed by the engineering firm Mott, Hay and Anderson. The bridge was officially opened on 10 October 1928 by King George V and has since become a defining symbol of Tyneside. It is ranked as the tenth tallest structure in the city. This massive structure is a must see with great stonemason work from its time. It would be great to see the old lifts restored and put back into use. I'm sure this would be visited by many that visit Newcastle. The lift doors are located in Lomard Street on Newcastle side.

Straight into the heart of newcastle - lovely bridge and great view on a nice sunny day - on a windy day its scary!! Cars far too close to the pavement though - as its the main road into newcastle it could really do with the railings between the road and path,

Apparently, the Sydney bridge was commissioned by the same designers who did Tyne bridge. There's so much similarity to it and it's just a beautiful sight.

Pretty much one of the symbols of Newcastle Upon Tyne, The Tyne Bridge is an absolutely beautiful arch bridge over the River Tyne, connecting Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead. You can drive, ride a bike or walk on it.

Built in the 1920s, linking Gateshead to Newcastle and once carrying the Great North Road, the bridge remains hugely important for the city, carrying 4 lanes of traffic and footpaths. A mini earlier version of the Sydney Harbor Bridge, you can see it from all over the city, and looks very dramatic while arriving or leaving Newcastle by train from the railway bridges. Probably most seen in the UK in September when the course of the Great North Run, a half marathon from Newcastle to South Shields, crosses it and the BBC cover the live race. Occasionally abseiling or zip wires allow adrenaline junkies to jump off safely, otherwise please don't even think about it.

A visit to Newcastle wouldn't be complete without a trip down to the quayside to see this iconic bridge. It lights up at night time and you get great photos. Even during the day it's such a great view. There is also a big lit up sign on it at the moment for the rugby World Cup as Newcastle is a host city this year Easy to get to from the city centre by walking or public transport and you can even visit one of the many restaurants/bars at the quayside while you are there.

This is one of all the bridges in Newcastle. It's from1928 and is a symbol for Newcastle. At the time it was said to be the longest in Great Britain.

I moved away a fair few years ago. This site when returning for a visit always makes me smile. A true icon of the city and the area as a whole.
