If you can nab a ticket for a recital or concert at the Sheldonian, go for it! But beware: seats are not the most comfortable. So bring a cushion!
Designed by Sir Christopher Wren this is an amazing build to stroll round. We visited for a look round not to see a performance. The recently restored magnificent ceiling was painted by Robert Streater during the reign of King Charles II. It's fascinating to sit in different sections of the tiered seating built into the circular building. Following the narrow corridors round and moving up the wooden stair ways you get a real sense of an atmosphere full of enjoyment and anticipation before a performance. At the top you can enjoy one of the best indoor 360 degree panoramic views of Oxford from the Cupola. Good photo opportunity - you can see a long way on a clear day. Adult cost to visit - £3.50Due to the nature of the building its not totally accessible for people in wheel chairs or who struggle to walk.
Been a few times to concerts, which it is well suited for giving an intimate atmosphere. The history of the building is impressive, as is quite common in Oxford. The only drawback is that some of the seats in the raised tiers were probably designed I. The 1650's when the building was erected when people were smaller and hence can be quite uncomfortable for anyone above 6' tall. Choose carefully!
I must say that this building is a masterpiece!!! incredible view from the top. Must see!!!!! and it is so huge privilige to be where all the students from Oxford graduate> :DWe will come in summer when they will launch Guided Tours.
Dear Luke J,Thank you for your review. The Sheldonian Theatre is the official ceremonial hall of the University of Oxford and we hire the venue for concerts. We do not deal with selling tickets and seating people this is the responsibility of the promotor who in this case was City of Oxford Orchestra. I am really sorry to hear about any inconvenience that you encountered during the concert. I can pass your complaint to City of Oxford Orchestra. If you have any further enquiries regarding the Sheldonian Theatre please do not hesitate to contact me.With Kindest Regards, The Sheldonian Theatre Team
This theater is surrounded by a very unique gate. Inside, there is a beautiful ceiling and worth stopping in to see another historic Oxford site.
I love this building, but it was the first time I'd been able to climb up to the Cupola. Quire superb.
Impressive ceremonial biulding where official university events take place. Visitors can "feel" the academic history of Oxford when entering the building and seeing the original furnishings, paintings and layout of the main hall.
Listening to the Oxford Philarmonica Orchestra with their amazing guest soloists in the historic Sheldonian theatre is a real treat . the acoustics and décor are amazing and there are a couple of historic pubs just reachable for quick interval drink . Watch the seat you reserve , many are cramped and quite a lot have no backs to them but you're so close to the orchestra and soloists that you have the most amazing experience
An absolutely amazing building, had an amazing time walking around the building, so full of history and significance, central to Oxford's history. I did a walking tour and the guide was so knowledgeable about the history of the building.
Tour given by Oxford City Walk company" David". Great guide brought the history to life with amusing anecdotes and relevance,Was happy to answer questions . Would recommend booking with this company
I've graduated recently from the business school at University of Oxford, and the weekend following our ceremony was special. This theatre is so full of history and stage to many movies. Being part of Oxford's 800+ years of tradition was a unique experience and one that will certainly be remembered for life. The Sheldonian Theatre is beautiful from inside and outside. The acoustic inside was perfect, making the 4-people choir's pieces fulfill all corners of the theatre. The decor itself is simple but the historical elements in each detail, plus the whole context for graduates and guests, makes this unique experience.Add to all of it a superb summer-like sunny weekend and you will surely never want to leave!
A 17th century design masterpiece. Had a wonderful experience enjoying an evening of entertainment from a classical orchestra. Building is magnificent and acoustics of a very high quality.Very minor niggles - steep, congested staircases; bot much leg room at seats; no air con can make for sweaty corridors; and lack of a bar area serving drinks - we went down the street for a bottle of water during the interval. However, these niggles would not have been felt so keenly by the original audiences!
